Hi everyone, I'm new to the whole forum so please go easy on me! 
Have an important question to ask you fellow PH'ers. Im currently 22 and drive a 1.4 diesel Fiesta. And to be honest I want something different and good fun to drive I only work 4 miles from where I live so I'd like to commute in it.
The important thing I guess is my budget which is £6,000. It can be 2 or 4 seats, not bothered.
Any advice would be a great help! Cheers

Nice and in budget however i'd be wary of running costs and I don't know about insurance.

Your biggest issue is likely to be insurance. Also is that £6k cash or finance and does it need to include insurance or just the car purchase?
Lastly, do you like to tinker on a car? As in are you happy to part maintain it and do simple jobs on it? If so then it potentially opens up a huge array of other cars.
Personally I see no reason why you should have a boring car, and should you have the means being young is the ideal time to have a selfish car, partly because its cool, but mostly because you are far less likely to need a sensible ride or have over-bearing responsibilities.
On the insurance front classic and kit cars are likely to offer the best deals. Kits are very specialist, so phoning round is a must and not just using price comparison websites. You won't be able to get a "classic policy" on a classic as these usually require you to have access to another car insured in your name. But as a rule classic cars will be cheaper to insure on a normal policy.
As an example, a friend of mine (who was only a year or so older than you), could insure my V8 powered RWD sports car for only £50 more than insuring a 1.4 Corsa and cheaper than insuring a old'ish 1.6 Astra.
Other things to consider with classics and kits is they are likely to hold their money very well. So buy, maintain and sell on in a couple of years time and overall ownership costs could potentially be very low.
Slightly over budget, but they do crop up nearer your budget from time to time.

Quite rare, but a tidy Ginetta G31 or G32 would be a lot of fun and leave plenty of pennies left over for mods and running costs.
There are loads of of hatches and normal (usually fairly boring) cars on offer too. But to me none would be as much fun or as enjoyable as any of the above.
I'd go for an MX-5 too. For that kind of money you could get a great one, and the insurance is not completely bum-raping. Good looking, fun to drive and a bit of an event every time you get in it. If you go for a faster, more performance oriented car you will probably be wanting to budget at least £2000 for insurance.

Indeed, I'd recommend looking for an MX5. It's always fun to drive, for instance my drive home from work was made infinitely more enjoyable by having the buzzy twin cam noise reverberating behind a Depeche Mode soundtrack, and making three steering adjustments as the car tried to oversteer at 20mph on a small roundabout define the MX5 as both a great drivers car and a slightly more dangerous proposition!If it's only 2 seats you need.. This. Amazing fun, far rarer than an MX-5 and very cheap to run. Just make sure its had the rears sorted for rust and 5th gear doesn't pop out.Or if you fancy something more normal (1.4 diesel to an MX-5 or MR2 might be a bit of a leap) aim for something off the beaten track that will be cheaper insurance and still good fun. Hot hatch will probably be a no-no for this very reason unless you must have one.
How much work you're prepared to do yourself would be a big decider in what you can realistically maintain. Although cars get cheap their servicing/maintenance costs stay pretty much the same their entire life.
If you're prepared to dive in the deep end, my off the beaten track suggestion is a Jaguar XK8 convertible. Insurance may well be comparable to anything else vaguely sporty and you'll be swanning around in a a great looking car with a 4L V8 under your foot. Should be able to get a decent early one (watch out for nikasil engines!) and still have a couple of K in the bank for servicing and maintenance. And 20mpg might be a bit of a surprise from a 60mpg diesel fiesta but on a 4 mile commute it might not be so bad.
I quite like the MR2.
A little more expensive than the MX-5 for a similar age car but if you don't want to follow the herd its a good choice.
