what car on this budget?

I currently commute into the city, train ticket costs me £340 per month.

I have a job offer which means I'd no longer be able to commute by train, but rather a 20mile/45min each way country roads car commute

For the sake of comparing the offer that's on the table, I want to compare the commute. timewise, it's the same, so the comparison is based on cost alone (although ill enjoy a car commute far more than worst crapital disconnect (first capital connect)

For a TOTAL (fuel, servicing, depreciation, tax, insurance, MOTs) monthly budget of £340 a month (what I pay now to commute) - could I run a cheap commute car? I was thinking a few-year-old aygo for the commute, due to reliability/£30 road tax/fuel economy.

would love suggestions if you guys have any

A 5 yr old Ford Focus would be where I would head.

Deepends on the specific roads being driven upon, how much traffic, etc, but yes, that's the principle I follow Life is too short for public transport and crappy cars for commuting

appreciate the input guys, especially the personal contract hire option, which I hadn't thought of as an option for me.

regarding whether I should be scrooging on this or not, the way I see it, there's not much motoring joy to be had in the rush hour commute, so I'd sooner go super-economical on that, and do trackdays on a second "toy" car with the money I save! fuel is so expensive now, that I dont intend to waste it sitting in traffic, If im going to give over my hard earned to the government in the form of heavy tax on fuel, I'll make sure I get the maximum enjoyment out of using that fuel!

Plenty if choice of affordable candidates, either newer on finance or older cheaper classics. All fully capable of a 20 mile drive twice a day.

You do know that not everyone is prepared to put up with the potential unreliability of an older car don't you? Some people just want to put the key in drive it until the service light comes on, and drop it at the dealers doorstep when something falls off.

If you went for a 207 I could guarantee something falling off would happen and it would be as luxurious and refined as a 1984 Fiesta Popular.

I travel all over the UK for business and I nearly bought a sensible diesel drudge-mobile but then I remembered I love driving! It costs me a bit more but whenever I have the time I get off the motorways and start burning the V-Power on the backroads to get where I'm going. I'd hate to be stuck all week in something that doesn't raise a grin when the road opens up!
