Cars that sit at dealers for ages

I'm currently looking to change my car and was in same position this time last year. have been surprised about the amount of cars that are still sitting on the same forecourts at the same price or higher. There was one I even offered £7800 on the sticker price of £7995 and he wouldnt deal. Was thimking about going back to see if he would do deal now but not really sure now if I want a car that has sat outside for at least 12 months hardly moving.

Whats longest car seen sitting unsold ?

Saw an mk1 MX-5 sitting at a used car dealers once. Used to cycle past every day to work. Spotted it at £999 and a few days of riding past, curiosity got the better of me and I went in for a wander around.

Had a flat tyre, rust on both rear arches, dent or two in one of the front wings and the paint looked a mess in places. Mileage was also pretty high (100+ IIRC).

I lost interest and thought it worth not a lot more than £400.

The car was there for a further 8 or so months with the same price in the window. The car and the dealer seemed to disappear over night though. Not surprised trying to flog st like that.

while now ,£1M ? pricetag ,should have sold by now

There's a certain import dealer near to Merry Hill in Dudley that have had an FTO for sale for over 3 years now - still advertised as "Fresh Import"

I went to look at an SLK with a local used car dealer. Liked the car, asked the sales guy if he'd be interested in my MX5. Absolutely say's he, full of enthusiasm, can always sell those. Came out, took a load of details, really keen (it's a nice one, good spec/colour, low mileage), says he'll speak to the boss Monday, come back to me with a price.

That was two months ago, I've bought an almost identical (but lower mileage) SLK since, and theirs is still sat in their showroom...

They don't help themselves sometimes.

I know a local car dealer who once had a Rover 25 in stock for,I kid you not,4 years.Started out at £4495 and he ended up selling for £1995.I always used to joke with other dealers that it was due a birthday party every year and when it got to 4 years we considered taking a cake to the dealer with 4 candles on to let him blow them out!

I looked at an 1997 Red Audi A6 in 2001 at a garage between Harrogate & Ripon. It was very low milage and up for £6995. It is still for sale @ £2995. Still looks in good nick, but I would imagine it will be a liability!

We found one of my dad's old company cars 2 years after he got rid at a dealer with the same miles he sold it on. We assumed it had been clocked. Not so. Apparently no one wanted a 4 door Granada in White. Who knew?

When i worked at a SAAB dealer ,some of the 900 [classic] 4 doors sat around for a very long time

including the ex demos ,because some of the salesmen [there was a fair turnover of them]

that ordered them in bizarre colours ,anyone remember cameo beige c1981

SAAB did have some fairly awful colours back then which cannot have helped resale

There's a garage that I pass that has an orange 206 on the forecourt that has been for sale for years literally

1991 built Sierra Sapphire 1.8LX. The only L registered Sierra in the UK (1994) a year after the Mondeo was launched. It was forgotten in the compound of City Ford in Slough due to a paperwork mix up.

My father briefly looked at an 51' E39 BMW 530 up for sale at a local garage back in March 2007 before deciding it was overpriced. It's still there 4 years later (at around the same price IIRC), although it does sometimes seem to move around the forecort.

there was a Pulsar at a local used car dealership (since moved to another town) which a mate and I were very fond of, wasn't a bad example and quite a fair price also... Pitty neither of use were able to run or insure it at that time. Went down there a few times for a "test drive" got friendly with the bloke and after a while he was aware that we were only wanting a wee hoon, he didnt have a problem with it though.

Is this just a random unrelated story, or did you forget to say how long the Pulsar sat at the dealer for?

I saw a brand new Lambo contach at a dealer about 5 years ago it had stood for 20 years, just over 200K pounds, and when I asked that did not include the service, oil, hose etc changes it would need, was still there when the dealer folded.

There's a brand new AMG CLK Black sitting in a nearby Merc dealership since 2007. I was once offered to buy it for just $90,000. That's alot of car for the money. It's in Kazakhstan though

Check out the Panorama Bay Espada, it's starting to look good value after almost a decade of enhancing their showroom !
