Question about tax/SORN...

I have a car which I put on SORN over the winter for the first time. I now want to tax the car again and will do it online.

Simple question... if I pay for it online today or before 31st March I assume the new tax disc expire 31/3/12? And therefore its worth me waiting a few days till 1st April so it expires 30/4/12?

I think you may have to wait until half way through April for it to run out at the end of April next year. Not sure though

This, although I don't know if you can buy one ahead of time, i.e. getting one now for next month, if you don't have one already.

It will start at the beginning of whichever month we're at when you apply. So if you're at your computer at 11:58pm on 31st March it will start on 1st March. If you wait a few minutes until after midnight it will start 1st April. However, the new post Budget VED amounts will come into play on 1st April.

You're right, I've just been on the direct.gov website. The £205 I'll pay in March will go up to £215 from 1st April.

Okay, definitive answer after calling the DVLA...

If I pay between today 25th and 31st March 2011, the tax disc will expire 29th Feb 2012 = 335 days for £205 = 61p p/day
If I pay from 1st April 2011 the tax disc will expire 31st March 2012 = 366 days but at £210 = 57p p/day

Saves about £14 over the year by waiting till 1 April.
