Up to £9k, must not be more than 5 yrs old and must not have more than 50k on the clock and must not feel like "its on stilts" going round a corner.

Currently narrowed it down to a Prius.

Any other thoughts?

I've got a Fiesta Zetec S tdci that will do that as long as you don't thrash it. But depends how much space you want. It is good fun round bends as well.

imho a new prius as a company car makes sense as you don't pay for the running of it

but a 5 year old one with batteries may need renewing etc doesn't imho make a good proposition

No-one I know gets close to that from a pious, about 48-55 tops, and not so good in winter.

Recent D4D Yaris, maybe not just as fun as the Fiesta but overall a better car IMHO.

Just remember any of these cars that quote 60+ MPG are real world mid 50's and car computers tend to lie.

My best is 73.6 average over a week to work, but that is mostly motorways and taking it very easy, no hard accelerating etc.

Mostly I get low 60's

Plus is, when you want it to go, it's really not that bad, I was pleasantly surprised. Bought it because we had 2 cars at the time that barely did over 20mpg, it seemed the best option at the time, cheap tax as well.

The thing to remember is that although diesels make compelling headline MPG figures, they cost more to buy and diesel is even more expensive than Super Unleaded petrol.

I'd be looking at pence per mile rather than miles per gallon.

what sort of mileage do you do?

When spending this sort of money, I'd be more concerned with running costs, and risk of repair.

no good buying a £9k car that throws you a £1k bill after 6 months eradicating any mpg benefits. Likewise a £9k Prius will be OOW will it not?

You'll be lucky to see 60mpg from a Prius on the motorway, they actually do better mpg around town from what I've heard.

When on a motorway the car is running mainly on the petrol engine, this means you're effectively driving a petrol car with a LOT of dead weight on board in the form of the hybrid system. Not a recipe for efficiency!

Unless my understanding of the Prius is totally out of date?

How about a Polo Tdi? Should manage 60mpg in this no? Also this car is an 09 with dealer warranty, so no surprises for a year at least.

Every anyone ever mentions the prius a few things happen

Someone sayes they hate the bloody awful things and only a total an utter would buy one

The other is some sayes the battery dies after 5 nano seconds

The prius has been for sale for ten years and seeing the battery according to internet law needs replacing on a yearly basis so e-bay must be stuffed full of battery packs

So why is there only one on e-bay

Or have they all been bought in secret by prius owners

Just for comparison there is 136 rover K-series head gaskets
