Buying a car that needs tax

Alright gents,

I'm collecting a car next Thursday that has MOT but no tax; the current owner stopped driving it a couple of weeks ago so it has no insurance at the moment either. I'll be transferring my insurance policy onto it before collection but obviously it won't appear on the Motor Insurance Database straight away and I won't have time to receive any documents through the post.

Simple question: If I turn up to a post office with the V5 New Keeper Supplement, MOT Certificate and a print out of my updated Insurance Certificate from my insurer will that be enough to buy some tax?

What's your secret? Beating the vendor with a wet haddock until they agree to include tax in the price?

At my price point a car coming without tax or MOT is often a deal breaker as it could easily double the value of the car I have been known to haggle six months into the deal.
