MY98 etc

Hi all,

Probably nice and obvious, but sometimes I hear people describe cars(/engines) as things like MY98, MY99 etc. What is the MY bit for? I assume the double digit is the year of build, but the only thing I can think the MY is is Mid Year, but the new number plate system didnt go back as far as 98, so I am confused.
