Below is the VED rates for new cars bought in 2010-11, the so-called 'showroom tax'. These are the rates you will pay in the first year of ownership.

In the second year VED road tax rates will revert to the regular rate for that vehicle.

First-year VED rates in 2010-11
Band A (up to 100g/km CO2) no fee
Band B (101-110g/km CO2) no fee
Band C (111-120g/km CO2) no fee
Band D (121-130g/km CO2) no fee
Band E (131-140g/km CO2) £110
Band F (141- 150g/km CO2) £125
Band G (151 to 165g/km CO2) £155

Band L (226 to 255g/km CO2) £750
Band M (Over 255g/km CO2) £950

Please note these charges apply to cars registered after March 1, 2001. Vehicles registered before this date are taxed according to their engine size. From April 2009 cars with engines under 1549cc will pay £125 a year, and cars with engines over 1549cc will pay £190 a year.

Mine is a K.

I bought it in December, a 05 plate. I could've bought one a year newer, same spec and with 10.000 miles LESS on the clock but I wouldn't give the taxman the extra money purely on principle.

It would have killed me to go to the post office and hand over the higher tax figure for a little circle of paper frown

I know I lost out, when you add up one car against the other, but I feel better for it smile

Not over 1549cc £130 12 months / £71.50 6 months
Over 1549cc £215 / £118.25

not a huge increase

Gone up a tenner for bigger engines. This year, I taxed mine as soon as the reminder came through for £205.

For the last two years, I've taxed it after the budget and been taken to the cleaners.

This is absolutely disgusting! When was this band M introduced?

This means out of my three cars, only two are now in the most 'polluting' bracket and the other is now in L. I'll have to sell it, I'm not driving round in anything that doesn't annoy the greenies properly! biggrin

The price to tax a boggo 1.8/2.0 family car is horrific.

Taxing non new cars on their emissions is a joke. You can bet if every new car buyer, including fleet, bought Band A cars, the loss of tax and vat on sales would soon see it turn to min £150 on all bands...

I ordered my R32 in Dec 2005 when the VED was circa £200 and by the time it arrived in June, our fiend GB had introduced the new band and it was £300. Now it's £445.

I calculate that as being a rise in excess of 120% in 5 years.
