Audi Readies RS6 For 2012

Ingolstadt pushes hot A6 to market next year to combat all-new BMW M5

Audi could reveal its new RS6 as soon as the 2012 Geneva motor, according to reports in the Dutch press.

Traditionally, RS-model Audis have only rolled into dealers later on in a model's lifecycle, but Ingolstadt is pushing its new RS6 to market barely a year after the all-new 'cooking' A6, which hits dealers this spring.

This is presumably to steal the M5's thunder, as the twin-turbo V8 BMW is due to make its motor show debut in Shanghai this April before going on sale in September.

Powering the new RS6 will most likely be a twin-turbo V8 with anything between 550hp and 600hp (although some reports suggest that a naturally aspirated V10 could find its way under the bonnet), while a slightly less spicy S6 (expected to hit the streets just before the RS6's unveiling next March) will get a 430hp naturally aspirated V8

Still no RS4?

the RS5 and RS3 just aren't the same..... and the RS6 is too heavy - why does it seem Audi are intent on missing all the best opportunities these days.

If that gets an N/A V10 I'll drink enough petrol to move it 0.5 miles.

Was the last RS6 considered a success?

Awaits the hate for this car from the BMW and Porsche worriers now, despite it only being a speculative story...

Maybe because the RS4 is still the business? I've got one and am certainly not tempted by anything else at the moment...

Ha ha, this is PH's.

But seriously is the RS6 a much loved model even by the Audi fanboys.

Completely agree - got RS4 Avant and as much as i like it, i do like changing my car every 3-4 years and as it stands there isn't much out there that lights my fire (well not on my budget, otherwise it'd be a Ferrari FF)

i don't think they'll worry. Even the last RS6 which was a couple of years younger than the previous M5 wasn't the better drive.

From just about every review i've ever read/watched no RS6 has ever been the better drive over the M5, sure, it may be faster....but not as thrilling.

BMW know how to make fast saloon cars, and they do it pretty well. Audi are good too, but not quite up there yet IMO.

If they give it the N/A V10 they might poach a few customers...can't see this happening but

The last S6 had a NA V10 and was pretty awful, it was the twin turbo's that made the RS6 such a monster on British roads, well, that and Quattro to put it down.

My guess it'll be a V8TT - who'd of thought we'd be seeing 600bhp production estate cars!

I really don't think the owners/prospective owners, any more than the engineers at M GmbH and Porsche are losing any sleep over this.

Not at all - if they put a naturally aspirated engine in it i'll seriously consider swapping sides. I certainly wont be replacing my current M car with a new one with turbos on it.

The M5 is undeniably more thrilling when pressing on, but for real-world daily driving the RS6 is smoother, more comfortable, and better both in traffic jams and when just cruising along. And in Sport mode, it's only a whisker short of the M5.

Sometimes you just want to get there in comfort, quickly, with all your luggage, so you don't actually want that driver's edge. In fact that could get annoying. Having a second car tucked away in the garage for the proper driving is often a better option (assuming space and budget allow). Everyone has different needs and preferences, but mine fitted well with the RS6.

Magazine articles often miss the point of some cars they review. I remember one saying the integrale was pointless because it was LHD only.

That said, I can't see me wanting the new RS6, as the current one does everything much better than I was expecting it to. And it has a V10. smile

totally agree, i don't think i was clear enough. what i meant was that the audi is unlikely to tempt those who would rather the drivers' package away from prospective M5 owners smile

Chris harris (i think) seemed to think the new M5 is more comfy than the outgoing model. He said "something is going to have to go very, very wrong between now and release for it not to be anything but a triumph"

Interesting that some reports suggest that it will be naturally aspirated V10. Not only do Audi have considerable experience of turbocharging, everyone else is going down the downsizing / turbo route.

Can't see it being an NA engine.

it is a strange beast the current model, the press give it a hard time, but I know a few owners and its one of those cars that people who own love.I've never encountered an owner with a bad word to say about it.Itt didn't light my fire when I drove one,but as has been mentioned I agree it is a better daily drive than an m5.
