Peugeot 307 HDI chip

I have a friend who has just bought a '55 plate Quicksilver 307 138 bhp HDi. It has about 45k on the clock. He only took delivery two days ago but has already been asking me my thoughts on getting the car chipped.
Apparently he has found a company this will chip the car to just over 160bhp for around £300.
I personally don't see the point in this but he has asked anyway, so here goes. Has anyone had any experience of chipping a disel engnine like this (good or bad)? And, is it safe to do so? Also, what do people think about chipping a car like this?
