Ford Cougar, what engine do i put in her???

So strong possibility of requiring a new engine in my V6 cougar. so what do you think i should put in might as well consider a better alternaive that fits haha. so any helpfull ideas would be great thanks

Um... not the best motor to do a conversion really. Although i'll always suggest any kind of V8 as it will be awesome.

But FWD will be a challenge.

I'm guessing they must share the same block pretty much..?

It could be, but most Cougars had the 2.5 rather than the 3.0.

I think there's a 4.0 version of this engine from America.

Making it rear wheel drive would be imense but not an option really :/. st200 engine ive looked but there are very rare anoyingly. i like the idea of the explorer 4L a fair bit though but will it fit?

Vectra/omega V6's are cheap to pick up ...... I suppose box would need to be changed and various mounts and loom would have to be modified to suite.

I'm fairly certain the old MX-6 had that very same engine (or near enough to).

So perhaps something from one of the later (more 'fruity') Mazda models?

The Mazda MX-6 and the Probe was a joint venture between Ford/Mazda. They shared a Mazda engine.

Isn't the V6 in the cougar a ford engine?

Yeah its the Duratec 25 (2.5) i believe its A,erican engine, but dont hold me to that.

I'd just break it for parts and buy another car - whatever you spend on sourcing and fitting an engine will be a lot more than the cost of buying another V6 Cougar.

The 4.0lt Ford Exploder engine is based on the old Cologne, not the newer V6 lump.

ive only just paid this car off from the bank of mum and dad, so if i can save it i would rather. Otherwise its a loan for a suitable replacment

Yep this has been done before by the chap who initially started the UK Cougar owners club - its pretty much the same engine but a 3 litre instead of a 2.5

Thing is, a Cougar is worth sod all, so I can't see it being worth the effort.

It was the probe that had the mazda V6

I've got a Cougar and I would personally just get another car. They are worth nothing at all and there are loads of them on eBay all the time.

Just put it on eBay as spares or repairs and buy something else.

Doing the engine conversion is going to cost a fortune, be loads of hassle and ultimately be pointless.

So surely your best bet is simply to replace like for like.

Getting the same engine from a scrapyard should be a doddle surely?
