Petrol & Diesel, what's the most fuel efficient new car on the market today?

P.S, must have four seats.

I assume you mean "economical" rather than "efficient", in which case I think the answer is a diesel Smart.

Really?

As far as fuel type - I'd argue it'd be obtuse to take 'fuel efficient' to mean anything other than petrol / diesel, unless the OP specifies otherwise! smile

Edit: the figures for that car you posted above are incredible redface

Why an odd question, if you are looking for a commuting tool it's a perfectly valid question.

because fuel is used for electric cars in producing the electricity.
the problem with this is how the electricity is produced in the first place to whether it is infinite or not. a wind turbine powered charger for an electric car would come under this.

fuel is used to power the people to power a pedal-car.
- this wasn't such a daft image to post earlier. Wiki links a bicycle as the equivalent of 670mpg, so a 4 wheeled one much pull back at least 350mpg, which is not much better than walking in terms of energy.
- I thought it was interesting anyway frown

Are you looking at buying or is it just a question about what car gets the highest claimed mpg?

If it's the former, then does price, depreciation and running costs form a part of your decision?

Also what will you be using the vehicle for? Long distance cruising, town run about, tow car, track days, high speed autobahn?

Claimed figures won't always tell you what would truly be the most economical for your intended use.

There's no single definitive answer to the question really. For ploughing up and down motorways everyday then a 1.6 diesel might be the most efficient. For crawling through busy city centres then electric is probably the way to go.

Personally I think fuel economy figures should be 'customisable'. IE you input your mileage and type of driving on the manufacturer website, and it gives you a more accurate idea of what kind of economy you can get.
Should get rid of the 'this smart car is supposed to do 80mpg but i'm only getting 45mpg' arguments.

About 20,000 miles a year, 90% on m/way at around 70mph.

At the moment Polo Bluemotion, Citroen DS3, Mini Clubman diesel, Audi A1 diesel & Volvo C30 Drive are high on the list

308 HDI holds the world record, 1100+ miles to 60 litres of diesel.

Average 90.2mpg over 9060 miles. If that's not efficient, then I'm not sure what is.

I suspect most modern diesels will be quite comparable and should offer an easy attainable high mpg.

Are you looking at new cars or what's your budget? The BMW 118d seems pretty stout on fuel considering it's still an ok rwd drivers car.

And as much as the Prius is slated, it is quite good mpg wise if you can make use of the electric power. Not so sure how easy that'd be @ 70mph though.

Is the new Honda CR-Z a four seater? They would maybe be a more "fun" alternative.

world record? odd.
the diahatsu charade I linked earlier does 100+mpg.

have done some checking on the net and this seems to be correct as well.

what world record was that?

Was on the list, but after a test drive the economy was not as good as Honda would have you believe, under 50mpg on the open road.
