Basic Drift Car!

A mate of mine is currently on the hunt for a decent 200SX S13, as a daily driver and part time drift car. He has a decent budget to play with and as a result, has lots of options open to him. I'm interested in the concept of owning a drift car and think it would be good fun to join in at the Santa Pod 'Drift What Ya Brung' events, as well as being a second car to take the strain off the Elise

However my budget is less. I'm looking around the £1K mark at the moment and there are a couple of 200SX S13's available at this price range. Are there any other cars worth considering that are RWD, cheap to buy, easy to work on and fairly reliable? MX5? I'm not mechanically minded, which perhaps makes this idea a bad one, but I feel this would be a good car to practice on!

I think a lot of people use the Volvo 440, Not the most attractive car in the world though...

Meh, everybody does it with a Nissan. Get a Volvo 340 and drop in a 4.6 Range Rover engine which are ten a penny. Job done.

Unless FWD drifting is suddenly popular I think you meant 340.

Might be worthwhile googling "tramp drift" - loads of uberbudget drifters.

Pump up the rear Linglongs to around 60PSI and laugh yourself into a coma.

MX-5 will need a roll bar/cage but can be had for about a grand.

Omega V6, can be had for around a grand and will do hoops all day.

Old 5 series BMW 525s, the E34s as the sports ones had an LSD and 200 odd bhp.

I'll have a look at some of the Volvo's ... They should be pretty bomb-proof, cheap and incredibly cheap to insure

OP - if you want a driftcar for under £1k, reliable and driftable ( as in actually DRIFTING, not sliding through one corner while fighting the steering and suspension flaws in an old Ovlov wagon...) then the recipe is simple:

Good call on the BMW! However Confused.com is stating that the cheapest quote for me on a 325i Coupe is £734! A 200SX is £100 cheaper and a Volvo 340 is another £150 less still ... I'm currently insured with Admiral, so perhaps they can do something with a multi-car policy. I might have to look into this a bit more

MR2 and MGF are too expensive to buy ...

And you obviously have limited experience with comments like that!

A BMW for less than a grand will be kaput, especially one for £600. End of story. Apart from which, what 'suspension and steering flaws' does the Volvo have that the BMW doesn't? The Volvo is also more powerful than your BMW suggestion and easier to get more power out of too. There is after all a reason why they're so popular with Scandinavian 'drifters'.

Ok, mr Ovlov specialist - if you're so confident: How about a bet?? Put your money where your mouth is.

Get yourself a Volvo 940, I'll bring a 325, we'll meet at the Santa Pod's DWYB and we'll do a "drift-off".

All day of drifting, we'll let other people judge which car is more suitable also we'll see which one won't break down.

And let's make it more fun - £500 bet?

It shouldn't be a problem if you're so confident in your Volvo power, right? Easy money for you...

£100 or £150 difference is really worth it mate. Trust me, I went through it, learn from my mistakes.

Also, as much as I value and love PistonHeads - this really isn't the best place for questions about drifting.

Go to driftworks.com , there's no better forum for that.

Purely an example of what you can do with a bit of skill and no, they're not all hugely modified as you'll see if you watch all the clips.

I would however pay to see the drift off. You organising it?

It's not for you to watch, we'll do it ourselves. I thought you know what you're talking about?

Buy a 940 Volvo (or borrow, I don't care...), bring it to Pod, I'll bring a 325, better car takes £500 home. Not straight-forward enough?
