documents needed to buy a car?

If you are buying a car from a dealer and paying by debit card or bank transfer what documents do you need?

Licence?
insurance (for tax disc)
????

None really, you just pay for the car with your debit card like you would for any other good/ service and drive away. Obviously the car will need a current tax disk, MOT where applicable and insurance but you don't usually need documents with you to prove that to the dealer. You may need to ring your bank to get authorisation if its a large transaction though.

For significant purchases (> £9000?), do you not need proof of ID/address for money launderering reg purposes? I had to show my driving license last time I bought a car and paid for it on my debit card.

For a new car they will want insurance in your name, purely because they can then register that vehicle. For a used car not such a hassle.

That about it you will need document wise, unless you are goign finance route

used car, none

new car, proof of insurance, if buying with finance you need a whole lot more, but a straight purchase, only insurance!

No ID needed at all for a used car, irrespective of the amount.

Many do 7 days free insurance now so you don't even have to change and take in your insurance cert.

It's not a good idea to rely on the free insurance for driving the car though as it usually has a big excess.

Not usually. However, with Skoda, I know if the car is tagged, they do require it at some times. Its just an evil Skoda Standard that makes sure you are registering it to a real person. May also ask for a copy of yoru licence. PITA!
