Buying a registration of your choice at DVLA auctions.

DVLA will auction a registration that has not been issued and using the sites below, they will tell you if your desired plate is currently on a car and when it was issued or if it has been already sold at auction.
If you cannot see it then it is either an old plate on retention or it has been issued and has been scrapped or it has not been issued to a vehicle.
The current auction catalogue will give an indication of the starting prices with something with a prefix or a suffix being the cheapest and single letter/single number being the most expensive.
The best way of getting a cheap plate is to use three letters say TOM with your birth month/year say 478 and the initial of your surname say J.
Email DVLA jody.davies@dvla.gsi.gov.uk and ask her if TOM 478J was ever issued or J468 TOM and if one of them has not, ask if they will auction it for you.
If you want one without a prefix/suffix say TOM 478 or 748 TOM the start price will be £1900+ and there will be more interest and it will be auctioned at a live auctions.
At auction a prefix/suffix will most likely be an online one and all you have to do is hope nobody with the same name/initial/DOB does not see it!
The three number/three letter ones etc usually go to live auction as you will see on their website unless them think it an 'unpopular combination' when it will go to online auction.
Use the previously auctioned section on the DVLA site to give you an idea of what they have sold for.

Even if some registrations were issued not all of them were used and with the suffix/prefix plates if they issued ABC *S then ABC won't have been used again for another four years (iirc) so ABC*T, V and W may not have been issued.
If you catch the DVLA at the right time then they will put it in the next live auction so long as there isn't the same letters already been chosen in the same price range in which case it will go into the next one.
If you can think up some alternatives you will have a better chance of one that is available.
When you get the email that says your chosen registration is going in a future auction then you are in and if you don't get an email then they have forgotten all about you so send another email to remind them!
You will get an email reminding you to register and you will be able to bid online (not recommended) or on the phone if you cannot attend in person.
If you are successful then you give them a 10% deposit (taken from your card details you registered with) and pay the outstanding about a week later.
