Really tedious 90's Jap car question

Hi

Im desperate for help for reasons which really dont stand up to scrutiny
Its Friday night and I know its poor that this is all Im doing

Anyway Ive been racking my brains trying to recall a Japanese car a mate drove in the early 90's

It was probably made in 1990/91 and was probably current for a little while before and after
Im sure it was Japanese but I cant remember what exactly
Only that it probably wasnt anything good like a Toyota and was probably second division like a Suzuki perhaps

It was a 3 door hatch, probably between a Fiesta and Escort in size at the time

The best I can say to you is that it had an exaggerated roof line and was pretty distinctive, not as pronounced as an AMC Pacer but certainly more styled that a Ford of the time

I know this is really poor but if I can pull it out of the bag my mate will be speechless

No it wasnt a Mazda

It was far too dull for that which is why I cant remember

It was functional and really boring

But it was as high up and rounded as the Mazdas are slow slung and edgy if you know what I mean

EDIT: Was definitely dullo functional hatch bought by people who dont care about cars and nothing racy
