Not sure if this has been done but what are the best lines you have heard from traders trying to sell you a car. Ive had a couple recently and it amaizes me how much rubbish they talk some times.

1."I havent repaired that big scratch on the front of the car becasue i think it takes away the character of the car and makes it less honest"

2.Trader: "hear that whilstling sound?..thats the turbo", Me:Oooo (trying to sound impressed) but whats that knocking sound coming from the engine. Trader:"ermm turbo aswell i think"

3. "that part of the car is a different colour to the rest because thats where the sun has been shining on it"....me "dosent it shine on the whole car at the same time?"

When buying a Vette, the wipers were not working (happened to be a dirty fuse):

" Wipers?? It's a classic car, who would need windscreen wipers? You don't drive it in rain..."

The classic:

"You could probably keep it for a couple of years and sell it on again for the same amount..."

Yeah right; especially with an extra 20K on the clock...

Looking at a car the front slam panel was brand new with fresh paint. The car quite clearly had been in a recent front end smash.

I was already walking away but I'd though I'd ask the salesman about it.

His excuse 'You see the manufacturer doesnt apply corrosion resistant paint to the slam panel from the factory so it's a common problem in the future for them to rust there. We've taken care of that for you by treating and repainting it now'

Makes me laugh when dealers make up claims about the cars which just aren't true

One dealer told me when I was looking for a Merc ML that it was the original luxury 4x4...

He forgot about Range Rovers though

Trader selling TD5 Discovery..."That's a BMW engine". Yeah really, BMW developed a 5 cylinder engine just for this.

Common misconception/balls about the TD5.

Looking at a 1998 Jag XKR, asked the dealer if the tensioners had been upgraded

His answer was "obviously yes as it has the expensive 20 inch wheels"

Thought the 'storm' engine was a BMW derived unit?
I know it made more power than the 4 but weighed more so the performance was fairly similar

Nah, it was a development that Land Rover had been working on before BMW arrived. It's based on one of their older 4 cyl engines. L-series maybe?

ETA some 'anorak' TD5 info...

Me - 'Riiiiight.... see you later....'

I went to see a car with my brother, for him, being sold by an Polish trader in Luton.

He was eager for us to leave a deposit, but we told him we wanted some time to think about it, so he 'secretly' called his wife, got her to call him back, put her on loudspeaker and she pretended to be someone who viewed the car earlier and said she was coming to buy it first thing the next morning (she had a Polish accent).

We laughed, and walked.

On the other hand, I advertised my first car for sale and had lots of calls about it on the first evening. I was washing it, so I arranged the viewings for the following day. One of the callers (a lady with a distinctive accent who was calling on behalf of her son) begged to see it that evening, before anyone else, but I refused, as I wanted to finish washing it.

Later, as I finished washing it, a lady with a distinctive accent pulled up outside my house with her son, telling me she was in the area to buy some sofas and asking me, since my car looked nice, if it happened to be for sale!

I laughed, and sold it.

Trader, on the phone: "it's immaculate, you won't be disappointed"

Me, having looked over the car: "it's missing a wheelarch liner, has a smashed foglight, needs new tyres and brake discs, a missing advisory notice from the last mot, a damp boot carpet and receipts for big brakes, big turbo and a remap. What's that all about?"

Trader: "Ah right, well it's only just come in, I didn't know about any of that"

Me: "You've wasted my morning. goodbye."
