How do you all manage it?

I'm in the unfortunate position of only being 20 with 2 fault claims getmecoat in the last 3 years - so insurance is a pain.

Thinking about a fun shed for the summer cloud9 but I think insurance would be prohibitively expensive even with a low annual mileage. As a guide, a MK1 1.6 MX-5 is about twice as much to insure as my Picanto with my current insurer.

Are there any insurers that'll provide decent rates for a second car - after all I can only drive one at a time and it's probably more likely that the commuting box is involved in an accident.....

I didn't get my second car until I was in my 30's which probably helped and my (then) current insurers mirrored the no claims (which was 9 years at that time with no claims/convictions) on my original policy which made the price much more reasonable.

Have you tried Admiral multicar? I use them and they seem by far the cheapest

Buy a classic or future classic, garage it, limit your mileage to 3000, insure no commuting, and join the owners club and speak to specialist insurers (phone them) not your typical comparison site companys. oh and find a good broker.

Hmmm - my current policy is with another Admiral Group company so I'd need to cancel that to move it over - will get a quote though thumbup

Don't need to cancel it, you just arrange a guaranteed price for whenever your renewal is due, then you just insure it for however many months so both cars start/finish at the same time, then if you renew its easier.

I have a F/comp policy with Autonet for my Kangoo van. In the winter, bought an old Forester for the snow (what a piece of kit!)
Just rang the insurer and asked if the could mirror my no claims discount. "Yep, should'nt be a problem, but let me just run it past the underwriter....., Ok fine £300 F/comp, for self, spose and father"
I was 39 with over 9yrs no claims, but it seemed like they do it all the time

Must depend who you speak to and when

I have 20+ years NCB. And have just bought a second car and have to start from scratch on it.

I assume it'd be pretty difficult to sell on a convertible after the summer? scratchchin

Thinking I could just insure it for a few months and then sell on, cancelling the insurance.

Ring Admiral rather than use their website, as you'll only have one set of NCB at the moment (that's assuming you have some lol) then you can't use it twice when insuring a second car.

When I rang Admiral for their mlti-car they agreed to mirror my NCB onto the second car, which is something their website won't do.

Most companies will mirror your NCB if you have a good record and are 30+. You can always shortly after cancel the policy, get a part refund and then go elsewhere. Admiral MC was good for me, however, when I mapped my car Keith Michaels saved me hundreds of pounds (in fact the 7 month refund payed for the entire year with KM).
