I'm on the hunt for an old diesel, no more than around £700.
There are a few decent cars around that budget, and I know that its more about tax and test than anything else.
However, I am not all the clued up on diesels, having owned only one in the past and stories of DMF and injector failures at about 2k worry my on a £600 car.
What sort of vintage will avoid the high pressure injector failures and the DMF (I am aware that turbo failure will be a constant worry). I have seen a moon miles Mondeo 2002 TD which im assuming isnt the TDCi, do these suffer from these failures? Another option is a 306 or 406 HDi, again, would these be less reliable than the previous 1.9TD's?
Any help is welcomed along with suggestions.

The old mk3 Mondeo TDDI (or TD sometimes) are much more reliable than the newer TDCI models, as are the even older mk2 1.8 TD Endura engines.
I hear old Mercs are good for reliability too?
If you look on Autotrader you will see VAG 1.9 TDIs at astronomical mileages - which most will easily obtain if maintained correctly. Someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to tell you what exact 1.9 TDI engines are best - off the top of my head it is the earlier ones without a certain type of injector.

t1.9 Tdi from VAG is a good bet in 90 or 110bhp guise, simple with no stupid emissions rubbish. They don't go wrong, the earlier the car the better the rest of will be on reliability. Modern VW's use super crap components on everything (just spending this morning fixing door locks that have seized up due to electrolytic corrosion.
Presonally I'd be happy to run about in something old skool like an old Merc, not the best economy but it will be reliable.
XUD Powered 306 Dturbo.
£700 will get you one easily.
42-45mpg all day long, more on the motorway.
All other costs are very cheap, mine has been reliable over the past few months. No modern diesel worries such as expensive injectors and DPF.
I bought it as a cheap throwaway hack, but I've become quite fond of it.

What on earth is wrong with a Mondeo?
Rest of the car is great, it's the moderately unreliable TDCi engine that's the only problem. My old 02 TDdi Mondeo was a great car and still going strong at 150k miles when I chopped it in for something newer and a bit less'council estate' a couple of years back. VAG TDi or Peugeot/Citroen 1.9TD are the way to go here though, my choice would be a ZX TD or a Xsara if you want a/c

The ZX Volcane looks fab though, in a retro kind of way.

+1, great little cars. If aesthetics bother you in any way, go for a 99 or later as post facelift they look a lot cleaner, clear indicators and colour coded bumpers etc. This one's somewhat over your budget but gives an idea. You could even go for a non turbo, but they're so slow I wouldn't recommend it!£700 will get you one easily.

Don't forget XUD and old school TDI 90/110 all run veg oil, bought used off ebay and settled then filtered. Or new from asda/costco £1/litre.
I bought a nice Alhambra 110 does everything I need and fuel 35p litre.
Depends on which type of pump it has. My ZX had the wrong type (I forget if it's the Bosch or Lucas) although apparently old engine oil works just as wellI bought a nice Alhambra 110 does everything I need and fuel 35p litre.

I can't comment on the VAG cars, but my old 206 HDi had 165k on it when I sold it and it was still running perfectly. My choice would be a 306 HDi at that price. The old 1.9TD's are a little agricultural compared to the HDi's.
That's because the HDi of that vintage is a little more refined, whereas the older TDi's are as you said, like a diesel. But the OP doesn't want refined, because as most new diesels do, the pump, injectors or turbo will go at some point. Along with EGR and all that crap.
Old diesels are simple things.
I've seen a few BMW 525TDS go for around that much recently.
