Sat Nav to get to work and back.

This is a little pet hate of mine and a little moan not that anyone else will probably care.
Just a quick point that I've noticed on the daily drive up and down the motorway in the morning and night.
So why the need to have a SatNav on when you drive the same way on the same road everyday?
Firstly this may be a broad sweeping statement by most people commute to a permanent place of work be it an office or factory or whatever.
I find that its an added distraction whilst driving oh I can read the speedo that tells me that I'm going over the speed limit and hence slow down. Therefore I don't need or want a voice to tell me if that were to happen.
Now I do understand that some have traffic reports and may help avoiding a 10min jam. But in my experience that most people will still continue the same way.

Speed camera alerts / more accurate speed readings / they're not actually going to the same place every day ?
I used a sat nav for work most days when I was going to multiple locations - would often travel the same stretch of motorway at the same time of day but be going somewhere different that day further along.

I use mine for a couple of reasons. Firstly it's the best part of a 90 mile journey. So is handy to have if I need to take a detour onto roads I don't know. I like the fact it shows me an accurate speed, shows known camera locations. And I like the fact it helps break the journey up by having waypoints to drive too, makes it seem less of a journey. But mostly I like it as the A34 is boring and very easy to miss the turning I need off it. The satnav reminds me.
The same reason that people need to have the latest bling-tastic mobile 'phone, and have it on their desks in front of them all the time at work. It's because people are measured by the value of their possessions, and having the latest shiny-shiny thing makes them more important; both more important when comparing with other people, and makes them feel better about themselves.
Do people really need to use a SatNav to get to where they go everyday? No, of course not, but if they don't use it every day then they don't get to look at it, and appreciate what fantastically important people they are ....

As if having a £100 tomtom marks you out as landed gentry, you insaniac! Do people really need to use a SatNav to get to where they go everyday? No, of course not, but if they don't use it every day then they don't get to look at it, and appreciate what fantastically important people they are ....

- I travel to a different place of work every week, typically more than one per week.
- Having your ETA worked out in realtime is useful. (Phone wife on way home, or know to slow down because you'll arrive early)
- The ability to route around traffic jams is useful.
- Knowing which lane you need to be in before you can see a junction is useful.
- Having an accurate speedo in your field of view as opposed to the car's lying speedometer is useful.
My pet hate is people that leave them on daylight brightness at night.
You see them driving down the motorway trying to peer past the intense glow of their Tom Tom lighting up the inside of their car like an arc light.
I dim the instruments right down on a motorway and they're not a fraction of the brightness of a navigator on daylight settings.
How do these people see? Or do they not need to since their Tom Tom tells them where the road is going?

Last month I went on a bit of a jolly to meet clients (read; get smashed for 4 days). They were in Taunton, Metz, Lille, Madrid, Barcelona and Monaco. For this you appreciate SatNav.

Of course it doesn't, but to Shayeesa in her 207 ("Powered by fairy dust", innit) purchased on a 19.9% HP scheme over 5 years, it's what marks her out from everyone else on the road, shows that she has more money than them and is therefore a better person. In my experience, landed gentry tend to drive anything old, usually german, and to have the crappiest most basic model of mobile 'phone they can find. But we've had this discussion on PH many times before.

I can definitely see this in relation to iphones, every a
hole leaves their new iphone 4 lying around on the desk and with little or no excuse will mention the fact it's got xxGb of memory and thus is better than most iphones other people have, sad wkers. I've never heard anyone try and make out a satnav is any sort of status symbol, not even in the late 90's when they were relatively rare & expensive, let alone now when they cost about the same as a night out. Shayeesa is more likely to mark out her 'wealth' by sticking daft extras onto the 207 (of course she'd have the CC) so that it costs 22 grand.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
