Afternoon Chaps,

Just spent the day with my dear old mum and dad, utterly shocked to hear that when he sent his (new shape) Passat TDI to vw for a minor service at a main dealer. They were busy and sent it to Kwik fit without first seeking his permission.

And still charged him VW servicing fees, well at least the lease company anyway.

They would have got away with this apart from, the day after it was delivered it started to leak oil. He checked the dip-stick and it was over filled. He complained to the lease company who sent out the RAC.

The inspector basically said the oil still looked old / dirty, suspecting they just topped it up rather than actually changed it. And given it was now leaking it should be sent straight back to VW on a low loader to be trained steam cleaned to see where the leaks were coming from.

At this stage the dealer had to come clean about the Kwik Fit situation, of course the car was sent to a different dealer this time.

Due to be over filled several of the seals have no gone and need replacing, the filter was not fitted properly. It doesn't seem like the oil was actually changed and the over filling of oil might have caused further damage.

And now it seems the gearbox (auto) is having problems and is going to need to be replaced. At this stage not sure if this is related, whether they did something stupid like topped that up with oil too but its strange a low mileage otherwise healthy car has suddenly had major problems AFTER being serviced by Kwik Fit.

Thankfully for my Dad this is a company lease car, so he has been given a Mondeo to drive around in while its being sorted out and if they're going to rebuild or replace the gear box hopefully all is well that ends well. Although I think the lease company are pretty pee'd off, what should have been a minor service is turning into quite an expensive affair for them.

But F*%k me, I'd be absolutely furious if that was my own car, I wouldn't let Kwik Fit change the wind screen wiper water let alone the oil...

I cannot believe a main dealer pulls stunts like that, from VW too!!??

Anyone heard of this before?

Yes, happened to our family many moons ago.

We ran Mondeo 1.8TD's as company cars. They'd do about 45k per annum for three years before we got shut.

One particular car had problems with very high oil consumption/suspected turbo problems around the 30k miles mark. We left it with the local Ford dealer to sort under warranty.

A few days later, we went to a local independant garage for an MOT on another of our cars and the Mondeo had been sent there by the Ford dealer to be sorted. The reason being is that they didn't want to get involved incase it was a big job!

We were ok with this as the garage had a good reputation and the car came back running like a swiss watch!

It sounds like you've had a particularly bad experience though!

Bloody hell. That's bad - particularly for the VW dealer. I'm guessing your Dad may be getting a new lease car shortly.

My old BMW dealer used to send cars to another garage for MOTs.

Sending a Vw to Kwik Fit though.... customer paying 3 times what they would direct at Kwik Fit...

These I can understand but a service is not acceptable in my book, absolutely disgraceful to send it to kwikfit.

Ive never heard of this before. The dealer I work for does subcontract for windscreens but we are not windscreen fitters by trade so it makes sense. Any MOT's we cannot do due to class reasons go to another branch within the group. But sending a car to be serviced at Kwik Fit for a manufacturer service is discracefull and the book should be thrown at the VW dealer for that sort of practice. Once again our reputation is tarnished yet again through greed.

I'd absolutely love it if a main dealer did this to me - The negative publicity they wouldn't want would mean some seriously good gestures of apology!!

That's amazing!

Just goes to show there is a difference in ability between Main Dealer staff and Kwik Fit wink

More seriously, bit of a shocking decision. Whislt some stuff is subcontracted. (Windscreens, sometimes MOTs, alloy repairs, auto gearbox strips spring to mind) I've never seen a car get sent elsewhere for service. (with the exception of a Touareg coming to us because the other dealer hadn't got the ramps to lift it safely) I'd also guess that the gearbox issue is unrelated though. A "minor" service is just a oil and filter and check over/top up the levels. Sometimes pollen if requested.

Not much really annoys me, but if it was my car (either my own personal car or one that I entrusted to take care of me while driving it) I would be unspeakably angry about this.

Regarding the oil level and auto-box, I don't know if you can see this http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engine/104553-oil-o... without logging in, but there'a a recent story about someone who took his Merc for an oil change at KF - they sucked the ATF out instead of the engine oil and didn't tell him and then overfilled the car with engine oil.

I know of several dealers that sub contract servicing, MOTs and tricky jobs that their monkeys can't cope with.

Book marked for the next time someone bangs on about how important it is to get a main dealer service history other wise the car will be worthless and will break down instantly

Any company that is willing to subcontract any of their work to Kwik Fit needs to be shut down, and quickly. I don't even class Kwik Fit as motor trade, they are just fking morons with garage space attached.

Disgusting behaviour on the part of the dealer, I hope you get some comeback.

Soooo glad I service all my own vehicles myself, and that I have that option. All these main dealer "fitters" and their ilk are just getting worse and worse...

I did a basic car maintainance course recently.

One of the people also on the course had worked at Kwik Fit for 2 years. He knew very little about how cars work, and most worrying of all when they let us play with tyre fitting machines he couldn't grasp the basics of wheel balancing.

Not Kwik Fit, but my daughter took her car to a competitor for a brake fault.

I knew what the problem was, and it certainly did NOT cost £613 to fix.

Took it to a Peugeot independent the next day, who fixed it for £75.

When I bought my new Audi TT in 2000 there was a scuff on one of the alloys so the dealer said they would replace the alloy with a new one. I took the car back the following weekend and expected it to be driven into the workshop for a 20 minute wheel/tyre change. Instead they started to drive it out onto the main road . . . I stopped them thinking they had confused my car with another car and only then did he tell me that they use Kwik F*ck for all their wheel/tyre work.

This was the same Audi dealer who, following a service, delivered to car back to the wrong address and put the keys through the letterbox. It was fortunate the people who lived at that house were honest !

This contributes to the reason I now only use independent specialists, less than half the price, twice the effort as they need their reputation and you can talk to the person working on your car - transparency.

This lease car that got knackered by Kwik Fit will still have a book saying full main dealer service history - I think the point is that having a book that says you have the history is somewhat less watertight than people think..
