Last year we had borrowed a 2010 S3 with and ever since she is a self proclaimed AUDI worshipper!

Now we cannot afford one of the new shapes but now want a 2001 onwards car, the 8L I think?

Our budget will be 5-6k

We will buy it in Ireland

Tell me about them

It's a smallish hatchback made by Audi.

It will probably be a huge disappointment after the 2010 model.

facelift 2001-on is the 225bhp BAM code 1.8 20vt with K04 KKK turbo and side-mount intercooler(s).

Longlife servicing is bad news, the oil isnt good enough for 20k changes. 6-10k depending on use.

Waterpumps like to break if they are plastic or sieze if they are metal, and should be maintenance items changed every 40k/4 years for peace of mind. stick with plastic ones, do the cambelt and BOTH tensioners too.

coil packs fail/pop up off the spark plug, some are bolt-down, which fixes the latter, but they are a known weak point with 20vt's.

MAF's like to fail quite a bit, so cleaning them isnt a bad idea, ask around for whats ok to use.

Haldex 4x4 system should be serviced, i dont know the interval off the top of my head.

Performance wise, a remap from a reputable tuner (revo, AMD, Jabba etc) will net 260-270bhp, anything more costs for not alot of gains.

Cracking cars once mapped, comfortable too.

I loved mine when I had it.

Really nice interior, good build quality and decent performance.

These are becoming real bargains now in my eyes, sold mine for 4750 not long ago.

a friend of mine has 2.

a pre-2001 and a post 2001, both accident repaired with mega-low miles, you can't tell his post 2001 has ever seen a shunt now, and his other one is mid-repair.

20vt's are a bit thirsty though, 20-30mpg, 40 on a motorway run.

OH and I have stumbled across this.

Would those tyres make you suspect, that maybe it has a hard life?

Wouldnt touch it, mainly due to long-life SH. It does the engines no good, if you saw the state of the oil when its dropped at 20k, you wouldnt leave it that long either.

WRT water pumps, here is old vs new at 60k:

so 80k is quite frankly bks.

the belt is £5, a genuine waterpump is £70 ish, and tensioners a couple of hundred, there is a rotational one and a hydraulic one.

HTH.

Christ, the servicing and parts on that thing will be huge.

Re: petrol guzzling - I thought they weren't as thirsty as that. It's nearly as bad as the V6 in the .:R!

Like I said earlier she is obsessed! I've taken her out in quite a few nice motors including Golf R, GTI, E350 etc She still goes back to a S3
