After another problem with the Focus (cooling problem) I decided to stop messing about with used cars and get something new. So far I'm torn between two cars that are the size I'm looking for and are in my price range, the Mitsubishi Lancer Sporthatch (2.0td gs2) and the Honda Civic (1.4 se 5dr). Took both for a test drive today and loved them both. If I was totally senseable I would get the Honda but I've fell for the Mitsubishi.
Anybody got any experiences of these two or have any other ideas of cars I should look at. Anything around the 16-17k mark with 5 doors.

Firstly, it's a bit odd to be comparing a 1.4 petrol to a 2.0 diesel - you need to decide if you do enough miles to justify going for the diesel. Secondly, both of those cars are getting on a bit. The Honda is probably due for replacement soon, while the Lancer never had very good reviews. The Mitsi is also likely to depreciate very badly.
Out of those two, I'd go for the Honda without a shadow of a doubt. However, if you just want something reliable (which seems to be the main reason you are wanting a new car), then you're probably best off looking at a Kia Cee'd. Good reviews in the motoring mags, and a 7 year warranty.

Kia Cee'd and a few quid in your pocket would also be my suggestion if your just looking for a no nonsense A to B type motor.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

A diesel would be a advantage, some days I can rack up the mileage. At the moment I'm just going on what I've seen in the showrooms, so the comparisons are a little vauge. I'm looking at the specs etc in the brochures and online. I went to the the skoda dealer to look at a Fabia vrs but I wasn't inpressed with the salesman. I never thought about the Kia mind.
