Depreciation proof?

Over a particularly vast curry last night, I got talking to a friend about what car I should move to when I finally get bored with bikes. This conversation then led to discussions about what cars you'd lose very little (or no) money on over 12 months of ownership.

The E46 M3 CSL was on the list alongside the 996 GT2 and 996 GT3 RS. Apart from this rather meagre group of metal, we struggled to come up with anything else which could be determined to be a reasonably safe bet.

Elises do pretty well, as long as they're over about three years old. Mine has lost under 3k in 4 years. I probably could have sold it for what I paid for it after twelve months.

We discounted Elises because we've 'done' them and are a bit tedious now

Well there's plenty of older cars that wont lose much.

Mustang GTs 2005-on tend to keep their price but ultimately you still have to find a buyer like any other car and most would rather buy a car that has depreciated like an avalanche.

It mainly has to be older cars really thst have bottomed out and are on the rise again due to becoming collectable.
Obvious, I know.
So....
Any pre-996 911. 996 onwards need to be the "special" models as you've mentioned.
E30 M3.
Cosworths.
Old hot hatches.
So if you mean depreciation proof, that is everyday usable, then probs just the few you've mentioned plus older 911's.
There'll be more, but I'm struggling to think of 'em.

How old would you want to go? Plenty of older stuff will have stopped (but buy in immaculate condition), e.g.:

NSX
BMW E30 M3
2.5-16 190E Mercs
Ferrari - Dino, 308/328, 400, 355, 430 Scud?
certain Espirits?
80s Aston V8 Vantage
Exige S1 (I know you've done 'em, but these look to be rising fast)
Merc 500E
Porsche 964s or 3.2 Carreras

you have to go older imho, these cars are likely to gain in value

air cooled 911's such as supersports and 1989 930's
e30 m3's
integrale evos
3 door cosworths
ferrari testarossa
mint 205 gtis
mint clio williams

if you go for something like a mint clio 172 well simply put there are too many of them for the price to ever increase.

some things may hold their value eg atoms, GT2's etc but I doubt they will gain in the near future

Yep pretty much all of the above.

There are plenty of pretty deprecition proof cars on the market at the moment.

Cater/fields - only cars I've never lost money on.

I'm thinking a nice 968 will be a pretty safe bet if that floats your boat.

I'll also add 190 Merc Cosworths - but finding a good one to start with is seeming very hard.

Z8 and Z1 both going to keep there value over the next few years.
The Morgan Aero is probably going to lose very little but I wouldn't imagine that any of these cars will be easy to shift on.

The conversation was mostly revolving around cars made this century, so lets set a cap of anything >=2000.

What mileage will you be doing and how hardcore a car do you want?

A MK1 Exige won't lose a fortune but if your going to do 20K a year on motorways it won't be that much fun.

Go for the non-evo. The vanos probs on the Evo are not over-hyped.
My Evo daily hack has gone now and I'm after a nice non-evo saloon to chuck my trackday boxes in the back and tow my trackcar.
The evos are usually down on power anyway, to almost the same as the normal one.
