Fast for five hundred, can it be done?

Long time lurker first post so hello everyone!

I have a 60 mile round trip to work everyday and have decided that I'm going to keep my boring slow diesel for the commute and get something fun for the weekends. I'm just looking for something that would be good fun on the B roads whilst not being too big/fuel thirsty.

My budget is £500-£700 max and I don't mind getting something that needs work, MOT fail etc. But I'm unsure what to get. I'm after something that's a bit special, Alfa GTV, etc, but I hoping you guys would have a better idea than me, so if you had the money what would you get?

I'll sell you a nice Fiat Coupe 20VT with very minor rear end damage for £700.

Apart from that it really is mint, would fix it myself but don't really have the time but would like it to go to a good home.

That's a very nice car for that money, even though it's damaged.
Undamaged 500£ will be very tight imho!

It really is in fantastic condition FSH, 2 owners from new and apart from as mentioned minor damage it barley has a scratch on it. That 5cyl engine sounds lovely aswell.

How about an MR2? Can still find Mk1's at that money that are a bit tatty, or a MK2 NA - there peanuts at the moment.

I have seen a couple of FTOs with no MOT in my budget. you do seem to get a lot for your money. Does anyone have any experience with them?

The Autotrader reviews are all sycophants saying how wonderful their cars are. I wouldn't trust any of them.

What's the rear like? Fukushima? If it's just scratches or a cracked bumper, I'd just leave it as it is if I were a buyer and enjoy driving it.

I picked up a classic Mini with a 120bhp A-series engine a year and a half ago for £500. Needed a bit of work but the mate I bought it with never got it done and we sold it. Went for £600 to a guy who, like you, was happy to do the work himself.

Never got to drive it but the guy we bought it from said it would keep up with an Impreza STI.

PMSL! I have mates with 150bhp+ Turbo'd 1380 mini's and they stuggle to get below a 14 second 1/4 mile...

I got my Golf VR6 as a non-runner with a knackered head gasket for £300, and after doing the work myself and selling most of the interior, head unit, speakers etc, the final cost came to about the same as the car in the first place. So yes, it can be done.
