Finally Made A Commuter Car Decision

After much dicking around trying to find the most economical commuter vehicle I could I made a decision.

It dawned on me, why am I looking spending £7000 + my px to get something economical & interesting, it's actually costing more than keeping my current car.

So I bought a slightly tatty 2001 Honda Insight for £1000 with the view to tidying it, getting an MOT & running it until it dies.

Having had one of these in the past & missing it's brilliance evey day it was an easy decision in the end, I know of one in the USA that has 500,000miles on it with only routine servicing & many that are over 250,000 miles, so at 95,000miles this one is just a wee baby.

That was my thought on it.

I may have to spend a few £££ here & there to get it tidy & reliable, but I can do most things myself & above all it's interesting & economical.

Was this the one on Ebay with what sounded like all the lights on including IMA and has been parked for 18months?

I guess you have found your way over to Insight Central? There will be some good advice on grid charging the battery pack before using it over there

I have one like that and strangley on my way to work today I found myself a couple of cars behind another Oxygen Blue Insight!

No, I don't think so anyway, it does have an SRS light on but that's all that show on the photos.

Do you know the reg of the ebay one?

The piece of tape is over the SRS light.

I think the metcalf/evo factor has made these sort of cool now, in a "i-have-something else-for-the-weekend" kind of way.

Agree they are way cooler than a prius.

You total bd. How did you find one for under a grand? Is it auto or manual? Is it CO2 or engine-capacity rated for tax purposes?

It a bit tatty, having missed out on a real steal of a 40k car at £4000 I resumed the search.

It needs some tidying & an MOT, will need an SRS fault looking at & the gearbox input shaft bearing is noisey, £20 in parts to do the job ) a few hrs labour.

Hopefully it will be OK.

I like these, not because of the eco thing but just because of how different they are.
I thought I'd get an insurance quote just and it was £2000 fully comp

Supplemetry Restraint System

Airbags & seatbelt pre-tensioners basically.

My pervious insight had the same, did a reset, error gone & no or error.

Whats the road tax on one of these? What sort of MPG might it be capable of?

I'm in the market for a new station car at the moment.

Registered after March 2001 it's £0, 80g of carbons.

When travelling from Bristol to Grove I would get 80-90mpg, on a steady A road run at 50-60mph it would do 100mpg+.

You got a bargain. Spend a few quid on it and it'll be worth £3k or more.

That makes so much more sense than a Prius with its 50-ish MPG. Shame they don't still make them.
