In an incredibly blatant piece of product placement Lynette and Tom discuss how if he took a new job they could afford, not just a "new car" or a "sports car", but "The new Lotus Evora", Lynette says "I believe the Evora runs to about $76,000". They get in and coo at it, there are scenes at the dealer.

This of course is the future of advertising in the Sky+ world. No-one watches ad breaks anymore. The closest we get to live is starting ten minutes after the programme begins to fast forward through the ads.

Simon.

They're even advertising the fact that there is going to be product placement in programmes now.

Get used to it, it's gonna happen more and more...

Big whoop. Ever seen "Bones"? I stopped watching it, because they spend half the program advertising Toyota. "Oh my Prius is wonderful" "oh my Prius has dynamic cruise control". Awful.

They have sneakily been advertising the Evora in Emmerdale since at least the start of the year. One of the Characters has it as his car and keeps mentioning it or giving someone else the keys to "the lotus" .

Thanks for that. How stereotype car dealer does she sound/ "This could be you? Do you want it?".

Of course it struggles with the plotline. They have more kids than you'd get in a Land Cruiser and Tom loves big V8s, but it's placed as a car for people who are comfortable not rich and as aspirational. It's not the car for the rich couple or the gay couple.

FWIW I think it's good to see Lotus pushing that hard.

If people are simple enough to be able to gain pleasure from watching soap operas, I doubt they'll even notice the product placement as it will invariably be more believeable and less contrived than the rest of the 'plot'.

The fatuous car placement has been going on in Desperate Housewives for years.

My favourite remains Mrs Solis in a nice Maserati convertible....

I watched it and oh my god, it was blatant. I didn't really care though, it has reignited my need for one, so it has worked! smile

For a 'typical suburban street' there are always some pretty tasty motors. DB9, Maserati, Nissan 350Z, classic Mustang. Another piece of blatant advertising was when one character bought a Lexus and spent about 5 minutes going on about it. I did enjoy it when they blew up a Prius though.. hehe

There is a bit of a difference between the characters being seen in a car, and giving a sales spiel on it.

...or is it just me..? hehe

Oh, and I noticed a lot of it on 'Entourage'. It's like a rolling advert for Maserati and Aston Martin.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeOnLTb0928

and of course, Ferrari realised they were being out-manoeuvred by Aston with the product placement.. The plotline was that 'Vince' (who plays an actor in the series) has just taken a role portraying Enzo Ferrari in a film; Ferrari get to shoehorn in lots of F430s and the new-at-the-time California...

Didn't Eva Longoria's character in Desperate Housewives vomit in a Porsche at a dealership when she was pregnant? Er, not that I watch the program or anything. Can't remember which one she got, but I remember her driving a convertible 911 in some of the episodes and iirc she had an Aston Martin DB9 Volante in some episodes too.

The door slam at 2:34 sounds cheap & nasty.

Surprised it wasn't edited out and dubbed over, in what is essentially an advertisement for Lotus.

Dear god that was pretty blatant. "This could be you. Living that life. Being that guy." When he starts the car (and starts revving it on a cold engine...) and then says "I don't know if we're gonna drive...or fly...", I laughed out loud at how cheesy it was. And obviously they can't show you him driving fast on the road, that would be irresponsible, so we only get to see the car moving at low speeds and an uncomfortable long, lingering shot of Lynette staring at Tom while he "drives" to some quiet V6 noises dubbed into the background.
