'Must own' cars.

A mate and I were chatting in the pub the other night about cars you must own in your lifetime. We came up with this short list which is by no means complete.



1. Original Mini

2. Shortwheel base Land Rover

3. Saab 900 Turbo

4. Subaru Impreza

5. Caterham 7 or similar

6. Mazda MX5

7. A 911 of some description

8. A TVR

9. An M3

10. S1 Lotus Elise

11. Lancia Delta Integrale - best suggestion yet I recon


As you can tell there is no criteria what so ever and the cars arn't all technically brilliant, they are simply that cars that we both think you should own at least once.



So seeing as it is a sunny friday afternoon and most of us are stuck at work what are your views?

I don't think you need to own any of those. You should try and drive them, and even then I wouldn't expect someone to like all of them. That list has a lot of similarities with the "You must own an Alfa to be a real petrol head" line that Alfa owners like to trot out.

Any Bad-ass Musclecar (classic or new-ish) i.e. Mustang/Camaro/Corvette/Firebird/Monaro etc etc.

I have never, ever understood that. Why do I NEED to own a understeery, small engined, FWD hatch/saloon?

I'll accept that the Alfasud probably handled like a dream but how many people under 30 have owned one of those?

What does a Brera V6 do that a M3/350z/TVR doesn't?

I've managed a few on my list

Integra DC2

but still have the following on the list

911 GT3
something by ferrari
Caterham
S1 exige

Anything with a 3.0 ltr M54 engine or evolution thereof. Also the M88.

A V8 and V12 engined car.

A convertible of some sort

A lighweight sports car

tried to be as general as possible other than my two favourite engines.

Not quite sure why anyone would put a Saab 900 Turbo in the list. I'd be interested to hear the justification for that one.

I think I'd do it by catagories:

A lightweight sports car (800kg at the very most),
a large engined GT,
a super saloon,
a rally rep,
a hot hatch,
a classic sports car,
a vintage car (pre 1920ish),
a self-built kit car,

and probably a few others that I've forgotten.

Weekend car with no roof.

Something made before 1980 (but classic, not just any old ste).

You can combine, so a 355 cab would tick 3 boxes at once =) If only I had the readies
