Hypothetical what car thread.
I am yet to sample the delights of the angled eight cylinder automobile. Have driven, however briefly, opposed flat six, v6 and of course many inline fours.
Now am wondering if there's a cheap way into v8 ownership. My impressions are that due to fuel prices, bigger engined cars are plummeting in price, especially older barges. I barely do any miles, so running it could be quite painless, could just fancy one for a laugh.
So, for the absolute minimum cash, what v8 monster would you buy? Proper shed money, so that if it breaks, you can weigh it in at the scrapyard and not lose too much cash.

SD1 Rover if they haven't gone up in price as would be classics? Old S class Merc as I'm sure there must be V8 versions that have dropped to shed prices by now, or perhaps a Range Rover from the 80s.

e38 7 series, 740i. I've had a number of them, great enthusiast community who will help you to fix any of the issues which come up, fantastic v8 experience, handles beautifully.

money pit.Rust is the major issue, but a welder can often help or don't worry about it too much. No point in scraping unless you have too. It won't ever be worth any less and will always sell. You could even strip the body off and fit a different on on the chassis.

D2 Audi A8. 4.2litre 300hp.
Paid £1475 for mine, ran it for about 8k and then sold it for £1650.
Only expense was the lower front supension arms and a service which I did myself and was covered by the negative depreciation. All in, a year of V8 ownership just cost me the fuel and insurance.
Oh, and being made of aluminium its probably worth that in scrap too!

I know you said the absolute minimum, but if you can stretch from shed money to still-way-less-than-the-cheapest-new-car-money-can-buy money, have you SEEN how cheap Monaros are getting? 
Having been for a ride in my first one recently and then discovered that £7k can pick one up, it's vaulted right up there to the top of the OMGI'MHAVINGONE list.
Seriously, that 5.7 V8 (small block chevy?) engine sounds the tits, pulls like an absolute demon and leaves 11s on the road EVERYWHERE. I'm smitten
