2nd car.. How are you insuring it?
Discussion
I'm pondering getting a second car for some fun but the last time I did this (Celica GTFour and mk2 GTI as the daily) my NCB would only apply to one. The other was then effectively a reset on my driving history and was also a huge ripoff.
What I'm looking to do is use my V6 4motion for the daily slog and mile munching and then get something special for blatting around in such as another MK2 GTI, Impreza, S2000 etc etc.
I'm 33 with 10 years clean driving in a nice part of the world for insurance. Am I wishing for the moon on a stick here or is this a reasonable thought?
If you run two cars and have insurance on both all year round let me know how you do it.

Not sure whether you can still do this but what the broker recommended when I first had 2 cars was.
Wait until the insurance renewal is due before you buy your second car
Use the renewal notice and go to another insurance coy to insure your original car
Tell the original insurance coy you have changed your car

I use Admiral Multicar for my cars. I've been able to add and remove cars on-the-fly in the past, and not only does your NCB get reflected from one car to the other, but there's also a healthy discount for each policy the more cars are put on there. It's definitely worth looking into, as Admiral seem to be pretty competitive on rates even without the multicar discount.

is that defined as 15+ years old still?
I don't think so. I insured the 968 on a classic policy when it was 11 years old. If I recall it was only about 3-400 pounds fully comp not using my NCB. I guess it goes by the type of car not just the age.I'm sure Classic Line or the ilk will say so on their websites.

Continue with your normal insurance on your main car and, as someone has already suggested, insure your second car (if it's the mk2 GTi) as a classic. I do this with my E30 320i. As long as it's garaged it costs buttons to insure a classic even on an agreed value policy.
I had better get that extension built so I can garage it then

+1 have 3 cars on this and all 3 are cheaper than individual policies!I have a Ford mile muncher and an STi. Originally I used Admiral multi-car, but then when I wanted a map for the STi they were way too dear. I changed the STi to Keith Micheals (transfered the NCB that Admiral had mirrored first time round - sweet) and saved 400+ quid. The multi-car policy is quite good, but the saving etc can be lost if insuring something a bit different.

+1.We have a multicar for the daily hacks and it's very keenly priced. At the last renewal I called up and was honest: Said I hadn't shopped around but I liked Admiral and wanted to stay with them but thought it was a bit dear. They knocked £150 off so I renewed on the spot. Good customer service. My old man has got a good deal with them, including his Aston so they cover all manner of cars. I've got the Exige through a separate specialist broker to get trackday cover so that's always worth considering if track work is on the horizon for your toy.

Peter Best do a 'cherished' car policy, basically a classic policy for your second car. I insured a 10 year old XJR (newest car I've ever owned!) very cheaply, less then I pay for my fully NCB 328i as a daily. But yes, as has been said they do sometimes insist it's garaged, not always.
I've got two cars and just insure them seperately. The multi-car quotes when I looked into it were not as advertsied - they're actually two seperate policies and worked out similar to two seperate policies, and obviously if the policies are seperate you can shop around and get it cheaper still with a more specific insurer for each car.
