What car next?

Hello,
I've been debating a fresh car for a while, thankfully I didn't plough in with getting a z3m coupe as initially planned as my circumstances have changes and now have to commute!
At the moment I have an e30 318is which is great fun, but I fancy something newer to play with!
The o/h has a mk5 golf gti which can/will be the "sensible" car, which gives me options... I'm thinking along the lines of the ph classic mx5 (mk2 1.8) and the newer Mr2... An Elise would be awesome but I'm not sure I want to sown that much!
Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Thanks!

I've had my mk2 1.8i S for about a month. You won't be disappointed 
I've gotten about 28 mpg from mine so far, but i've been driving it pretty hard so far, so when i calm down in it i expect that to improve a fair bit.
Of the 2, my research said get the 1.8, and try to find one with an LSD. The S model has this, as do several others. The 1.8 has stronger drivetrain components IIRC which is a bit irrelevant i suppose unless you're planning on modding it for more power. I read to avoid the 90bph 1.6 like the plague, the 115bhp is much better.
For reference... i got a '98 1.8i S with hard top and leather seats, and 54k on the clock for £3k from a dealer.

Lots of options at this money tbh. I do admit I like my own pick of a smart Roadster. But MGTF, MX, MR, Alfa, Barchetta, Copen, Z3 are all possibilities. Practicality isn't an issue - it'll be either me or the o/h taking it to work, but i want something fun/chuckable - my last cars of interest were the e30 318is, and a mk1 golf gti if that helps...?
Lots of none open air options too such as ITR, Prelude JDM, 200SX and many others.

I'd like an open top ideally, and I prefer rwd, have no desire to get an Alfa either, the MG-F my brother had and my mum both had head gasket failure, a friend of mine has a Smart, and whilst cool, his has broken a lot which puts me off... A copen, just no! Thanks for the suggestions though!

No, it was just a small indy dealer in Bicester that happened to have the right example for me. I was being picky about spec & colour (no bland silver or Jewish Racing Gold here!) so i had to travel to find what i wanted (i'm in Berkshire).
Hunt around and be patient and you'll find the right example, there's plenty of them about.
