Very un-PH - Ford Galaxy or other??

Thinking about the future and the need for a family-lugger, plus all the stuff, plus kids and their friends in the distant future.
Is the Galaxy a good car (i.e. reliable)? Or should I be looking at others?
I quite like the fact you can get previous gen Galaxy with lowish miles in Ghia, with the DVD headrests for £5k.

We've had a Seat Alhambra TDi 130 04 reg for about 4 1/2 years and its been very reliable. Only things that have gone wrong is a boost pipe which was 3150 and a cracked rear spring. Can't remember how much but not much.
Its pretty good on tyres and brakes and returns 40 mpg in normal use (short journeys & the occasional long trip) and 45 constant on the motorway.
We tow with ours and it lugs a 1500kg fully laden no problems.
Bought ours with 40k, now done 83k.
Just a thought, high-ish mileage S Max's can be had for around £6k now. A muuch better MPV dynamically and the TDCi engine is very good.

Saw a fully optioned S-Max which looked pretty good. Even had motorised seats and an lcd display where the rev counter should be. Alloys were from the x-pack or something which gives it a bit of a bodykit too.

We have the 2.3 Auto 2007 Galaxy. Fantastic car. Before that we had a 2001 Sharan- which was a complete POS. It would often go into limp mode, aircon didn't work and the ventilation was like something out of the 50's. Then the electrical problems started, like the speedo not working, fuel guage warning buzzer coming on even though we had 1/2 a tank and so on. The interior plastics were also nasty.
We've got an 05 2.3 petrol auto. Had it since 18 months old. Great car but mpg is in the low twenties and acceleration is pitiful. Petrols much better value than the 1.9 TDIs that everyone wants. It's worth seeking one out with the multimedia pack but they're quite rare as it was a 1k+ option when new. You can probably buy a portable DVD unit from Argos for about £100.
Only issue in 42k has been the pipe connector for the rear wash wipe popping off after a frost - which then soaks the passenger carpet and involves removing all the trim to re-connect.
Pollen filters are awkward to replace also.

Frankly the way fuel prices are I would avoid a petrol auto Galaxy/Sharan etc like the plague.
We had a 2.3 on the fleet, anyone allocated it complained like hell about consumption so it ended up in the pool, glad to get shut of it despite it having no mechanical issues.
16mpg out of a tank was not unusual.

On the petrol vs diesel point, I can only say VEL - massively more on the petrols.
My mother has an 06 Galaxy auto TDI. It's a good distance coverer but the slushbox is slow and dull. On a run, it will still do 35mpg at a respectable cruise.
Interestingly, I drove it to the airport and in Spain picked up a manual Alhambra TDI which is a little nicer inside and the 6 speed box is a much better proposition. The diesel is a good little lugger but I believe has to be well-maintained to avoid turbo problems.
