I do it - it's the only way I can get my motor to restart when warm, it clears the cylinders of fuel. If I don't, it's 10-15 seconds of cranking, then lots of spluttering. Good old Duratecs.

I'm guilty of this, no idea why I do it. Just a bad habit that I have no idea where I picked it up from. And I'm no chav.

I understood it was a hangover from the old carb days, where you had to clear the carb before turing the car off to prevent it flooding? Or something like that?

Obviously complete crap now and an easy way to spot morons.

I do it all the time but then again its a habit from having owned some very old carburetor cars. Can't remember the reason for it though.

Same here. It made the car easier to start in the olden days and it doesn't do any harm with modern cars, so I've never forced myself out of the habit.

I do it in my carby golf and in my carby camper. Other than that, the only blips are on downshifts

You do it on a two stroke to clean the plugs so they don't get oiled up... but you absolutely shouldn't do it with a four stroke engine. The petrol washes the oil from the bores and then you get scoring of the bores over time...

Its not a good thing to do.

I always do this too in my old school mini. It's got a carb and I was always lead to believe it stops the engine from "running on" when the ignition is turned off.
