Buy something quick before admiral + elephant stop quoting low insurance premiums :P If you're looking for power/efficiency I suggest a Ibiza 1.9 130 Fr, remap up to 175hp quite nicely.

I very much doubt he's going to be able to insure a remapped car at that age.

What is this 'Focus Zetec S' of which you speak?

The only one I'm aware of is the latest shape (well the one just replaced), which isn't going to be worth as little as a grand, even in pieces.

To be honest, I'd stick with the car you have if it's a good one. Anything you replace it with at that kind of price is going to be old enough and high enough mileage that it has the potential to be a serious money-pit if you're unlucky, even if it's got a Honda badge on the nose and a "full" service history.

If you must get something more powerful, it will depend a lot on what you can afford to insure which varies hugely by your postcode. You could certainly do worse than a Civic, but you inevitably pay something for the badge and reputation for reliability. I doubt anything else will drive as well as the Focus.
