I had one when is was 18, couldnt insure it at 17. Paid £1800 third party only. That was 12 years ago so id hate to think what itd be now. He should try a vtr, but it wont be a lot less.
Join the owners club, they should have an affiliated insurer.

Try some comparison sites, but also try other companies that are not on them such as Admiral, Elephant, Aviva, and Tesco. Put your parents on as named drivers, play about with the level of cover and excess, and you should be able to get it down a bit.

I would imagine it would cost quite a lot as that is the typical "boy racer" car. You can do much better for a first car than a Saxo anyway.

Look at left field choices such as Vectras, Capris, Discoveries, whatever!

What sort of car are you looking for, and what is your budget?

When I was 23 it was £610 for my VTS.
By the time I was 29 it was down to £260.

Don't think you should waste your time at 17.
Better to buy something slower to learn in, save your pennies and put towards something good when you are 21.

I wish I had stuck to that advice instead of paying £1300 to insure my Nova GTE when I was 18. Stupid choice.

Strangely it seems 2 seaters are a good option or young drivers as there are less passengers to distract/impress/kill.

Seriously..I couldn't get a quote out of Go Compare. At all. Not one of 122 companies would look at my imaginary 17 year old and write that policy for any amount of money.

Elephant would do it for £8k in a 106 GTi though, which is much the same car.
