auto electrician question

hi,
i am 16 and currently after a mechanics apprenticeship. Today i have been called by a agency telling me there is a vacancy for a auto electrician. Can anyone give me any idea of what this job consists of and anyone who is one, can you shed some light on what you do on a day to day basis, thanks in advance.
also is it a good career to be going in to.

The auto electrician that we use at work is always busy. Complex electronics is the way that automotive technology is moving. You'll learn alot about vehicle systems and there is a substantial overlap between electronic and mechanical systems, so you'll learn about mechanics as well. I would say that it is a better career choice than just mechanics.

Certainly a higher-paid one. The main things I'd expect an auto electrician dealing with the public to do are:Anything and everything to do with audio - head units, speakers, any complexity of amp/sub/control solutions,
Installing semi-permanent sat nav and other devices - getting wired-in mounts into the car to provide a better solution than loose cables and windscreen mounts etc,
Maybe tracing any general wiring fault such as electric windows playing up, fuses repeatedly blowing, similar stuff to that.
My understanding is that it's less general maintenance, and more dealing with aftermarket enhancements, but all this is just my impression
The alarms go off for me when its an agency ringing you. Do they want a fee? Are they involved with someone flogging courses?
Yes being an auto electrician can be a good earner. Different levels though. There are some who really understand the management systems - they *are* good and are the people you want when your HDi is playing up. Others do alarms/security and some just do audio/etc.

i registered with them, its REMIT. They get government funding i think.Yes being an auto electrician can be a good earner. Different levels though. Hello just seen your post there and thought i would give you some insight. I have just completed an Auto electrician apprenticeship with glasgow city council and also done the HNC in automotive electronics.
currently work on all council vehicles for example VW, Daf, Mercedes, Volvo, Citroen, Ford and Nissan. I work with LGVs and HGV so have a wide range of experience. Day to day an auto electrician's bread and butter will be fitting Reverse monitors, reverse sensors, diagnosing and rectifying starting and charging faults, dealing with air suspension electronics, plugging in computers and getting information for warning lights on the dash board fitting sensors if necessary.
With the HGVs we do electrics on Tail lifts on buses for disabled people, the rubbish crushing blade cycle electrics on bin lorrys and the net system on trailers. Also specialise in Diesel combustion heaters for passengers on buses. Alot of variety comes with the job and most of the time it will be doing more in depth fault finding rather than breaking your back over an engine bay. With cars going electric its definately the future.

I did the REMIT scheme for about 1 year and then my empolyers got fed up with it as I was just being piled with loads of h&s paper work Auto electrician is interesting occupation but to be honest I would go for a light vehicle technician appretniship as they will train you in electronics and complex vehicle systems such as can bus and most systems etc etc with the addition of learning the mechanical side so you would have the best of both worlds
