Hmm sounds like the MR2 would be more useful for slightly longer runs out.
If you're not that fussed about RWD, I can recommend a vtec prelude for ragging the tits off, picked mine up for a grand in Nov stuck about 5k on it and having a whale of a time with it, if you go for an import instead of uk look out for ones with 4ws, makes for more fun on roundabouts but its not quite a sub for rwd...

Used to have a 1992 2.3 Prelude with 4ws which was nice and sounded awesome when at high revs but I got bored with the auto box.I can imagine way more fun with a manual box.macp said:

MR2 is a fine car as is the mx5. Although you'll get more MGF for your money at this price and a VVC will be faster than MKI MX-5.
Last weeks SOTW the Rover BRM would be a good capable hot hatch at this price.
