Purchasing an un-insured car privately

Hey all, I may have found "the one" in my search for a new to me car, unfortunately the private seller has cashed in the tax and taken his insurance off it.

I know that this renders my DOC extension invalid so I can't test drive it on 3rd party cover.

I would ring Adrian Flux now and ask them if they will provide temporary cover for this purpose but they've closed. Has anyone on here done this before?

I checked out Day Insure and they want £60 for one days cover!! Also, the HPI check 7 day cover only applied to sales from dealers apparently?

Presumably this is for the purpose of a test drive? Won't be easy as even if you went for the day insure option, IIRC not having road tax disc renders the insurance invalid?

No, don't think it invalidates insurance, I'm prepared to take it for a spin round the block with no tax, but not no insurance.

I'm reasonably convinced that any normal police officer that pulled me over would be accommodating when the situation was explained and documentation shown to prove I was just test driving it.

Either that or they'll seize it, but that's not my problem unless I buy it! (Which unless the car is hiding something, I fully intend to do!)
