... what would you put in it?

I've thought long and hard (a good ten years) about what to do with my Escort and have decided against breaking it to build a Locost, against an immediate sale and against an "original" restoration. I want to get some modern suspension on it and give it a modern, reliable and, more importantly, very grunty engine. I want it to be a fast and able toy that just happens to look like a ratty old Ford.

Within reason, nothing huge that would require extensive modifications to the engine bay, so not the engine from a Viper, what would fit nice and snugly into a mk2 Escort and provide a nice sound and enough shove to crush your lungs?

Over to you Pistonheads, you're better at this stuff than me.

(300bhp/ton, I welcome your suggestions, really)

Honda F20 from an S2000. 9,000rpm, lovely bit of power and if you get bored, bang a supercharger on it smile

So as an off the wall thought..

The Noble is a Ford sourced V6 so I would think that it might be fairly easily workable and lets face it hardly short on power!

A friend of mine had a very nice MkII with a red-top Vauxhall 2.0 16V engine in. I've since heard they've become more common.

Perhaps not one for the purists, but I've heard nothing but good reports about it.

I thought this too, I'm pretty sure it'd fit and easily provide the power to make a mk 2 Escort entertaining but I was hoping for suggestions of a V flavour. It is a good idea, I just want something that sounds more interesting.

Vauxhall C20XE on throttle bodies or a C20LET, Conversion parts are avaliable. Cossie lumps are over done but Nissan 4cyl turbo motors are appearing in a few as are rotarys. There's plenty choice mate.

This is exactly what I was going to say.

However, it depends on weight. I think it would need to be sub 1000kg for that engine to be enough.

Really need to be an IL 4 from a rear driver to keep things relatively simple. Perhaps a BMW N20, 245bhp.

If you want a sweet noise, you really can't go wrong. And they're 230ish bhp standard, which in your car would be lethal...

Stick in a lardy V engine if you want but its your understeer.

4 pots are unloved only because they are normally in crappy everyday cars so the V snobs discount them.

Go find out what a Millington diamond is before you say its hit because it is a 4 pot

saw one with an s14 turbo engine in it a while back. good fit.

the BOA is a good engine and will fit in the escort (just) and is becoming a more well trodden area nowadays, but it's only 200bhp standard. nice sound tho.

Light weight high revving engines are most fun in light weight RWd cars

2.0 N/A
something VTEC or on throttle bodies, C20XE's are easy to get hold of and SBD parts can get 205bhp with very little effort on Throttle bodies.

Mate has a 1750 big valve pinto in his MK2 on twin 45's .... epic fun ! 8200rpm biggrin
