I've got one and it's a hoot to drive. Only a 1.6 but in a car that weighs 900KG it's great fun.

Obviously it's French so it comes with all the usual niggles but if you you can accept/live with them then you're good to go. Biggest challenge is finding one that hasn't been ruined.

I have been looking, and most seem to be horribly modified, however there are a few standard ones that I am currently looking at for around the £2000-£3000, I was wondering if it was worth the money really.

That one seems pretty tidy to me.

Or - shameless plug - you could buy a Saxo VTR like mine, which is currently in the classifieds.

/ end shameless plug.

Very nimble and nippy little cars - surprisingly frugal too. Don't expect a BMW-like interior and you won't be disappointed.

It's a real pain when that happens isn't it? I'd quite like another 205 GTi as a runaround, but you're now looking at mint restored examples that you pay a premium for and wouldn't dare drive on salted roads etc. or a bit of a dog. Even the 306 GTi-6 is starting to go that way. I'm sure there is a small patch of middle ground, but it's tended to polarise.

What about a VTS? Good deal cheaper, very similar performance

JC always rated them rather high. I think their biggest shame is if you type "106 GTI" into Google Images, nearly all the results are of Barried up Chav Mo-bills.

Interiors are a bit naff and typically French. But given the abuse both my Pugs had, the major mechanicals seemed to stand up to it rather well. Lots of load space with the seats folded down too. We used to get a full drum kit, 2 guitars, biggish guitar amp and a load of other stuff in the back of mine.

How would a Phase 2 Rallye compare to a GTI? Reckon I'd rather the Rallye myself, but that's based on opinion not facts. smile

I thought the 106gti was far too small so opted for its cheaper, rarer and unmolested bigger brother the 306 gti-6

Personally I'd make the budget £4000 and get this!

hehe

Edit: Found this as well, mileage bit high though! http://www.motoring.co.uk/used-cars/peugeot-306/uk...

I do like the idea of the S2 Rallye actually, it had come to mind but I never really looked into it. From looking in the past it seems most people put the gti engine in the Rallye anyway.

So good I owned mine for over 5 years, and only having to have a newish sensible car in return for my work's car allowance (and nowhere to keep the 106) made me sell it.

Not great on the motorway but otherwise brilliant. I kept it so long because I'd consider other cars and come to the conclusion that anything that was much better (and could still carry mountain bikes in the back) would cost way more to buy and run.

I have owned 2 of them, I sold my first one as I couldn't afford to keep fixing it when it broke but I missed it so much I bought another one. I personally wouldn't pay more than £1,500 for one but with low mileage they can be quite expensive. I managed to get my current one for £600 with tax and test.

If you are going to buy one check out the rear beam as they do go and can be expensive to fix. Have you driven one before? I love mine so much, it's great fun to drive, I don't think I will ever get rid of it!

I have a 106 XS, which is essentially a VTR with a 106 badge on it.

Stripped it out, and its a right laugh. Going to fit a VTS engine in it once we can find a cheap one

My son had a mint, low-miles,one owner 106 GTI. It was great to drive, nippy, good handling, but the brakes weren't very inspiring.

He kept it about 6 months and made a very tidy profit on it.

106 GTI and the Saxo VTS/VTR both suffer from the infamously fragile gearbox, know 2 people that have had to purchase a refurbed box after 80k-ish miles.

Great little cars, but for a £3k budget and wanting a hot hatch, it has to be a 172.

I've always found the interior on the 106 to be better quality than the one on the Saxo.

The TU engines are pretty good really. They'll leak oil from the front left corner of the head gasket, and they do like to blow head gaskets, but the bottom end is pretty solid, and they're quite tuneable.

As said, check the axle. You can usually tell even with the car on the ground. The rear wheels will have rediculous camber, the tyres will be worn badly on the inner edges, and there will be marks in the wheel arch. Also, when you drive it, it'll feel like it's got 4 wheel steering.

Make sure the drive shafts are intact and the boots haven't been changed recently. No replacement joints for these, it's a new shaft. They also tend to eat through clutch release bearings, so watch out for that as well.

This seems to be quite a common problem, however I have been involved with the track day malarky for a while. Of which for a while I had a VTS and a Saxo 1.4 (high lift cam etc etc), now both of these cars were driven in a manor of which would make eco-mentalists throw their hands into the air, and neither of them ever suffered any gearbox related issues. I always made sure all the levels and oils were up to temperature before any kind of abuse, so maybe that is why I never had any problems.

My friend however does have a 106 GTI and his g/box let go at 60k. I guess I was quite lucky.

All in all, the 106 GTI is a very fun car to drive. Watch out for issues with the torsion beam, dodgy seat mounts and well they are French. Buy a non modified one, with FSH and it should be a good'un
