Insurance for 19 y/o

My car is pretty much complete now 206 1.4 8v, so decided to try a couple of places, now i want to do things by the book and go on my own policy but the cheapest I've found is £6k! That's with no convictions, garaged, access to works van for 8 months with 0 claims, mum on the policy. It's starting to really bug me, all i want is some independance and i can't afford to give them all (yes all) of of my monthly earnings. Why do they make it so hard to get my own legitimate insurance. Can anyone recommend some insurance companies that won't completely pull my pants down or any other tips to bring the premium down please?

Try phoning around a few real brokers. Also sometimes garages can increase.

Try "ikube"

Means you get a curfew between 11pm and 6am (could be slightly different)
But has worked out VERY cheap for a few of my 17 y/o friends

Mess around with the quote i.e say it's park on the street. Believe it or not but some quotes are cheaper this way for some odd reason.

Thanks for the replies, the cheapest quote i got was on a comparison site by bell but need to fiddle with the quote more i think and try to get it cheaper.

i-kube, although i good idea in theory will be a last resort i think, i don't fancy being 13 again...

Dont just use comparison sites, they've always been quite expensive for me on certain cars, try the likes of tesco and direct line.

Best bet is to phone around for a quote.
I'm 23, been on the road for nearly 2 years (Passed June '09), and after using a comparison site, I called the Insurer that offered the best policy directly (Elephant), and they knocked about £100 or so off the price!
Makes me think the comparison sites are getting a rather large commission

I know the comparison sites take a commision but even if it was 10% it's still about 3k too expensive.

A lot of insurance companies won't insure people under 25 (What I found anyway) on cars with modifications. I'm guessing the 205 isn't standard by the way you say 'it's nearly complete'?

It's because an opportunist scallywag won't know which house they need to get keys from if your car is parked on the road.

Costs me £1600 fully comp with a list of modifications at 17. They credited me a years No claims aswell
