Hit a cat - please make me feel better.

Hi PH,
I'm a bit shaken up so apologies if this makes no sense, but around 2.5 hours ago I hit a cat in my car. I was literally about 20 seconds away from my house, so quickly ran inside and fetched my mum and my neighbour, as I was panicking. We went back to the poor thing and a lady had stopped and moved him onto the grass verge. I was in tears at this point, couldn't believe what I'd done.
So my neighbour wrapped him in a blanket, he was breathing a little bit, and I went with him to the vets about 2 minutes down the road, and they took him in. She has no collar or chip in, so we don't know how to contact the owner. The vet said it wasn't looking good and she was in a bad way. I'm still teary at this point.
Anyway, I left the vet my details and she's just called back; the cat's on a drip at the moment, and is still alive, but critical. She's going to phone back later this afternoon to update.
Is there anything else I should be doing at this point? I can't get my mind off the poor thing, I absolutely love animals to bits and would never ever want to hurt one. It just shot out from behind a car, like a streak of black, I didn't even know what it was exactly.

Seriously though, don't feel too bad, unfortunately it is a fact of life nowadays for animals. I wonder how many are killed each year on the roads?
My colleagues cat got knocked down, £800 in costs before it was put down. Vet's fees are outrageous.

Legally you're not obliged to do anything. If you hit a dog or livestock, then you have to inform the police, but cats have no legal protection in this scenario.
If there's no collar and ID tag, just tell yourself that the cat was likely to get run over at some point, that the owner doesn't / didn't care about it and that it wasn't your fault.

Kerching...... Hope you have a spare grand to hand. On a more positive note kitty is obviously not upto life number 9 yet so theres a chance you may well just have got yourself a pet......I went with him to the vets about 2 minutes down the road, and they took him in. They haven't actually, they've been really helpful. That's not to say they won't though.At the end of the day it could be somebody's pet, if it was your cat/dog/hamster that someone else had hurt then you would want them to do the best for the animal no matter what, wouldn't you? I'll concede I am a massive softy, it's just me, I can't help getting upset over potentially killing something.

Vets fees are probably little different to human medical fees, it's just that we are hidden from the cost of these.Private birth with elective caesarean £3800
