Not sure what the problem is with some of the top end diesel vans nowadays.

VW Transporter with a 174bhp engine

New Sprinter 319 with 190bhp

or the Vito Sport X with a 3.2 V6 and 204 bhp

The torque on them will be perfect for towing too.

There was a very nice ~2003 Transit with a rover V8 in it on Ebay recently, it sold for around £2.5k

I still would get the biggest possible diesel + remap

It'd probably be cheaper to buy an American motorhome and convert it to RHD. Plenty of them are fitted with big V8s in quite a low state of tune/high torque.

Is being brand new a must?
Until 2003, VW made the transporter with the 2.8 V6 (200bhp).

If that really isnt enough, turbo and superchargers are plentiful.

Probably a bit too small, but we've recently bought a Mazda Bongo with a 2.5 V6 petrol motor. Purrs...well sort of!

My parents are retiring and they want to buy a new van and get it converted to a campervan with their own specification. However my dad hates diesels, this hatred is rather fastidious (and rightly so). He's driven a few of the latest vans in their largest form (Transit, Iveco, Sprinter etc.) and they've all be too slow, noisy and have excessive NVH, this will obviously show even more when the weight is pushed up to a permanent 2.7 tons and even more when towing a track car and equipment.
except of course from an NVH point of view an empty van is an enormous 'subwoofer' even with a bulkhead, put some weight in it as well as insulation and soft furnishings - no more 'subwoofer'

slow, interesting , given the 180 / 200 BHP options available in Sprinters and Transits - especially if the dealer ticks boxes on the 'authorities' page of the spec sheet ( power outputs than 15 years ago were considered adequate for an 18 tonner)

ransporter sportlines are bloody fast just get one of them and tell him to not look at the rev counter and wear ear plugs smile

towing a track car in a powerful petrol van with camper equipment will average sub 20mpg surely.

Vans (most) are Diesel for a reason and play things are Petrol for a reason.

New shape transporters come with 2.0 litre common rail diesels.

Alot more refined than the old 1.9 and 2.5s

140bhp single turbo

180bhp twin turbo

Both 4 cylinder, very refined and rev very cleanly, and pull very well.

Twin turbo would remap to over 200bhp easily I imagine.

No other van handles like a transporter either!
