Any experiences shipping a car overseas?

i've shipped cars to Norway and to S E Asia from the UK, there is no problem just get a good agent, you get what you pay for, when I shipped to S E Asia I had a whole 20 Foot Container, I could have had a mezine deck made and paid for half a container, but it wasn't much cheaper, as I had to pay for the deck, and I could see more risk of damage, I just shipped a bike to Bornio in a shared container and I found that I had to wait two weeks while the made up the rest of the load.
The UK side is easy, you (in practice) can send the V5 back after the car is gone, when I shipped the bike they wanted proof that there was no outstanding finance, (but that was not from the UK,) never been asked for this with a shipment from the UK.

Thanks Berw. I'm looking to ship from the UK to Vancouver. Time is not an issue. You were concerned about damage... surely you had insurance?I had to pay for the deck, and I could see more risk of damage

We ship cars all over the world, as said a good shipping agent is a must, ours photographs the cars being loaded at every stage, the day after they are loaded we get a CDR full of high res photos showing each stage, the loading, strapping down etc.

If you are shipping then you can go in a 20x40 container or roll on roll off. The latter I would not recommend.
Shipping is about £2000 one way to LA, so would be similar to Vancouver and will take about 28 days. The thing is you have to give customs in the US between 2 - 4 weeks to get the car through customs. Bringing the car back for some reason is about 20% more expensive, don’t ask me why.
Flying a car would cost about £8000 one way, but you would be able to collect the car within 24 -48 hours.
You need to get a carnet that shows you are not looking to import or sell the car. That will allow you to enter the USA without having to pay any import charges etc.
