What is the most car you can buy for under £1000...

Serious PH advice required please...

We need a car that meets the following requirements:

1) Costs under £1000.
2) A high mileage car isn't an issue, but it MUST be a reliable short commuter.
3) MPG is not an issue as we do less than 5k a year, so OK with 1 litre diesel or a petrol V8.
4) 20+ years no claims so insurance isn't a problem.
5) Size not an issue, can be big or small
6) Type not a problem, can be a saloon, hatch, estate, bus, etc...
7) But I like my toys...

Been looking at a Chrysler Neon, Volvo S40, Citroen C5.

Please help

All nice cars with good road manners, decent kit and can handle huge mileages.

A local mechanic is selling one of these (V reg, 50,000 on the clock, sounds like it runs a bit lumpy=£800 iirc), the interior is so fabulously American. Hard blue plastics featuring buttons with labels so huge that they can be seen from space.

They know how to build a diesel. They also know how to build a comfortable seat. What they struggle with is electrics.

But for a bucket of sand, you could do a lot lot worse.
