Why do people do this to Golfs?

There seems to be a proliferation of badly modified Golf mark 4's at the moment.
I'm doing about 1000 miles a week and I keep seeing Golf's with stupidly large alloys, blacked out windows, bizzare colour schemes (dulux white with gloss black roof seems popluar around Birmingham). I dont have any photos but I see them everytime I am on a drive.
Badly driven, badly modified horrible Golfs - massive alloy wheels fitted that make the car sit far too high off the ground. Those Mk4 Golfs had the worst handling of any Golf - putting a set of 18" alloys from an Audi RS is not going to help (just raises the roll centre). Bonnet bra's, matt black paint on the bonnet, big tailpipes - why?
They are just making a bad car even worse, and it must cost them a forune for those stupid wheels, no doubt fitted with the cheapest rubber they can find - Nang kang or Ling Longs just to add to the effect of looks over performance.

It's part of a ridiculous movement called "DUB", which is where kids buy crap cars and then stick more crap on them, to show that they can own a car and feel like part of a community which is not about performance, because young people cannot afford insurance on fast cars.
But they can afford aftermarket exhausts, new wheels, tints, resprays etc...

I'm not so sure its the Dub scene ( I know they can really get into their mods -some great, some not so good).But the cars I keep noticing are just nasty old Golfs with huge over sized wheels (there is no style to what they are doing and these are not tyre strechers).
Its wierd bacause I dont see this on other similar aged hatchbacks (Focus or Astra or Corolla's) it just seems to be mk4 Golfs.
They aren't even worth talking about. Inwardly, they know it's st, they'll justify any criticism by calling everyone outside of their niche circle 'haterz', or if their mods are received badly within their own circles, then they have done it 'for the lolz'. Having someone even notice is what they aim to do.

Finally, I'd be very surprised if they were declared mods. But the chances of this biting you are pretty slim, so I can see why people would take the chance.
If on the other hand, you spend the money on a car with decent performance, then this you can't really hide from insurance unless you switch engines into a car which has a smaller engine in the log book. Fact is, for young drivers, the cost of some cheap rims, body tat, tints etc is still minimal compared to what they would spend trying to insure something with a bit of poke. As a reference, I'm a 24 year old professional yet I pay over a grand to insure my 330 and most of the jap stuff is silly money, so that is why the scene is based around looks and not performance.

I used to be into the whole modifying thing about 10-12 years ago as it was a bit of fun, now it seems like it's all about painting your knock-off audi rs4 replica wheels bright pink, and lowering the car until your wheels tuck under the arches and you're forced to do 5mph over any slight undulation in the road.
If the kids like it, fair play - but I don't see the point myself. We used to take our hot hatches and throw them down B roads to get our thrills, not sit in a carpark with identikit golf mk4's, boras and passats with pink wheels!

yeah, I will admit I thought the same - although it's pronounced akin to "bag" not "vadge"I am not a fan of that style of modding but i used to have a mk2 gti with a 1.8t engine and used to attend a lot of the vw shows and seen many of the cars in questions and 95% of the owners where nice down to earth people.Just because their cars not your your taste doesn't mean you have to be ignorant and say their cars look st and take the piss out of them i notice a lot of so called "grown men" are the ones bhing without realizing how ignorant and immature they sound. The question is why are so many people putting huge alloys on their otherwise standard s
tbox mk4 golfs? I'm not sure how the words superiority complex, immature and ignorant have anything to do with this thread but seeing as how you said it maybe you could explain it? (by the way today I was driving a Primera, a 944, two mk 5 Golfs, a Saxo and a Focus - and I've owned loads of Mk 4 Golfs, 1.4 1.6, 1.9, 2.3, 2.8 - mk 4 Golfs are not very good cars so why spend money on huge wheels?

The mk4 Golf is actually a very good car. Might not have the handling of a focus but as a long term ownership proposition for those who are more interested in comfort and quality than handling (i.e. most of the population) there's nothing wrong with them. In fact, have you ever driven one one yet alone owned one? They have an element of solidity (similar to a e39 5er imo), which wasn't replicated in the mk5 (although the mk6 is back to form).Agreed that the 'mods' don't improve the car in any way though.
Although if there's no adverse effect on you (other than to your eyes!) you may as well accept it if it makes the owners happy. Not my scene though.

I've owned lots of them, did you read the above? Have owned most variants (1.4, 1.6, 2.3, 2.8) and driven all variants (the 4-motion and R32 are quite good but thats about it) the rest are best described as soft spongy puddings. Both of my V5's had paperwork in their service history to show new sumps had been fitted due to contact with speed bumps. Synchromesh said:
