Retaining a personal reg

Just today I have taken a deposit on my Fisher Fury. The man came from Italy to view and has paid a deposit.. All good. However he wants to get it all sorted sooner rather than later and I still haven't removed my bloody personal reg.

Does anyone know if the dvla do a 'express' service or anything? Because the v5 will be issued back with the original reg, he can then take the car and v5 to Italy to register it there. Either that or would anyone know if it has to be retained anyway, as the car is going to be re registered abroad??

I'm a bit confused, you buy the plate then get your pants pulled down for keeping it and then again for transferring it. Does it technically belong to the car and not me?

If anyone could help it'd be much appreciated.

I have already googled it, main question was if they would do a fast turn around and I thought someone on here may know. I can't find an answer from searches, which probably means they don't.

Call your local DVLA office in the morning and see what they can do.

No they don't.

Many of the previous threads on this very subject have responses that include the time required to transfer a plate. . . . . or more importantly get the new V5 . . . the DVLA even have a website with all this information on

Been a while since I've done it but it takes a few weeks.

When you want to retain a plate on a car you are selling privately then its best to transfer the reg to retention before advertising. If you are part exchanging at a garage then they can sort it out for you.

A couple of weeks ago we went to the local DVLA office to put a plate on retention, 5 mins inside and about a week later the paperwork arrived, they said that was the quickest way.
