£5000.. ideas?

Pretty open ended 'What Car' thread here for a friend..
Budget £5000. needs 4 seats and to be 'a bit interesting' and less than 7 years old.
He does 17000 miles a year but isn't too fussed about petrol or diesel.
He's coming from a 2001 1.6 Ford Focus so is used to a slow, but reasonable handling motor.
I was thinking something like a warm Seat Lean..
Any other ideas?

Suburu WRX! Hear me out - try to find a standard one, they can return over 30mpg on a run despite 215/221 bhp. Maybe a 2003/4 Blobeye on reasonable miles with the cambelt done. Interesting, quite fast and great handling. Surprisingly comfortable on standard suspension and very reliable. Just resist the urge to mod it or watch the mpg plummet. Only bugbear is insurance which will sting a little after the 1.6 and looks may not be to taste. Worth a look, believe me.

Okay, fair enough then!I've been in an ST170 - alas not had a chance to drive one so I don't know what it would be like to play with - and was pretty underwhelmed by it. Bit noisy, bit crashy, not as fast as I thought, and would need to be a lot of fun to make itself worthwhile - that's why I went for the above

The 7 years thing isn't set in stone, he'd just like something a little newer than his Focus.
I completely forgot to mention.. he likes the idea of an Audi A3, but they all seem to be up at very strong prices.
I'll run the Subaru idea past him- hadn't thought of those at all (Same with the X-Type!) E46 330 would fit the bill- it's just they all seem a bit leggy at this price range?
A ST170 is a good shout.. as is the Leon Tdi & Fabia VRS.. I'll deff do a bit more research into those.
