After 2 days mulling this over I am still undecided so I need to turn to the collective wisdom of strangers before I eventually ignore what anyone says and do what I want regardless of opinion.
Swmbo will be getting a new car in the next month, brand new and partly financed just to throw a bit of trolling in there
, because of this one of our cars will be going.
At the minute I am doing few weekday miles but like the fact that the Volvo is big and practical enough to fill with stuff when I need to and that it is a comfortable way to smoke around. I dislike that it can be thirsty and when it breaks it will either be expensive or effectively written off.
The Ka is something I know the history of from new, is a fun drive, does 40mpg regardless of how it is driven, and isn't rusty yet. The bad bits are it being a bit small and it will need £400 ish spent in the next few months if kept.
It will make little difference to buying the new car whichever one we keep I just can't decide which is the best option.

There is a chance the new car could be a small hot-hatch just waiting test drive verdicts from a few options. If the new car is practical enough for 99% of trips, then that's a point in favour of keeping the Ka. If not, then it's got to be the Volvo.
If most of your miles are local, then there's another point for keeping the Ka. Conversely I'd not want to be doing lots of M-way miles in something as small and uncomfy as a Ka.
If the new car is fun to drive then there's a point towards keeping the Volvo. If the new car is image-over-fun then maybe keep the Ka to razz around a little in...
