Hmmm the IAM...otherwise known as the Institute of Advanced Beardy Pedants!
I can well believe they'll be some members on there determined that the limit should be reduced to protect the un-IAM'd from themselves, or some such patronising s

Woah there, we're not all beardy pedants, I'm a member and Observer as are a lot of others on here and are far from your dull stereotype, I mean come on, I spend my days driving the best sports cars in the world, do you think that sounds like a job for a beardy pedant?I can well believe they'll be some members on there determined that the limit should be reduced to protect the un-IAM'd from themselves, or some such patronising s

They don't do themselves any favours by coming out with a fair amount of tosh nowadays.markmullen said:

Yes, I stand corrected! An unfair generalisation...but you have to admit there are some real adenoidal and self righteous saddos in the membership! I went on some IAM rider training/assessment sessions when I was in Scotland a few years back, and out of about 6 or 7 guys, at least half belonged in the above category! Having said that, the chap that observed me was a great guy and we had a good giggle about the anoraks while having a tea break
Just like all groups with a wide membership, the IAM has it's share of anoraks. However, the new management at Head Office seem keen to concentrate more on driving skills as a core message, so perhaps with the help of Observers like Mark (and perhaps me) the image will start to improve.
It seems odd that many people reject the entire concept of Advanced Driving because some of the members of one organisation are a bit dull.

I voted 'other'. I'd prefer to see some sort of variable limit, personally.
Example, where conditions and the type of road allow - 3/4 lane motorway, dry, clear, off-peak, etc - there could simply be no limit.
Just outside Glasgow City there is a major rush-hour bottleneck that has a four-lane wide section of motorway. During busy times, it's essentially a car-park. Fine.
However, at the weekend (2.00am Saturday morn) I literally saw no-one else for about ten miles, it was dry & visibility was excellent, but I still had to pootle along at 50mph.... ish...

I would like to see a variable limit with no maximum, as on most derestricted stretches in Germany.
However, until there is an huge improvement in the attitude and skills of drivers, brought about perhaps by driver education, perhaps by chemical castration, true derestriction would be unsafe. The way driving is going, maybe they should lower the limit. It bodes ill that cars with super-aggressive styling are so popular.

So would I, but it would never happen in the UK,it's not that kind of place.
In Germany, you are allowed to think for yourself
what a sensible speed is, but in the UK thinking
for yourself while motoring is not allowed. Nanny state
and all that.
Interestingly, being allowed to drive as fast as you
like doesn't lead to more dangerous roads, in Germany
at least.
You can't measure safe driving in mph, as the
Germans are fully aware, and the Brits still haven't
latched on.

Thinking for yourself also requires a brain, which might be a problem for most British motorists. I agree with your sentiments, however.what a sensible speed is, but in the UK thinking

Speed limits never made any sense. They rely on two things. Trust of road users. Ability to police them. Both are wholly unreliable entities. Road users can't be trusted. Police lack ability to enforce. Speed limits might as well be abolished.
I think a speed limit makes a lot of sense in a residential area or by a school. But it is legitimate to question how limits are set (in general, and in particular on motorways) when many areas of the world manage to operate safe roads with higher (e.g. France) or substantially higher limits (e.g. Germany).

Used to give an idea of a safe speed for the average driver.
If you choose to go faster that's ok, but if you f
k up doing 90 round a blind bend don't expect the judge to be very lenient.Surely that's fair, use your brain to go at a safe speed for your car and your ability's in the conditions of the time and no problem.
Drive like a nutter and dangerously and expect to have problems.
